Hess second at DeKalb (08/22/05)
JCHS boys tennis
DEKALB — Kurt Hess made quick work of his first opponent and dominated the final two sets against his second before falling to West Noble’s Nathan Horne in his third.
Hess was the lone member of the Jay County boys tennis team to make it to the finals at the DeKalb Invitational Saturday, where he lost to Horne 6-0, 6-1. Overall, the Patriots placed fifth in the eight-team field, scoring 10 points.
The host Barons took the title with 29 points, and East Noble and West Noble tied for second with 22 apiece. Angloa was fourth with 19.
Hess dominated David Brege of Norwell, who he had also played against for a set Thursday night before the match was delayed by rain, as he won by a 6-2, 6-1 count in the No. 1 singles match-up. The victory earned him a match against Tommy Kurtz of NorthWood in the semifinals.
Kurtz, who needed three sets to win his first-round match, took the opening set from Hess, 7-6 (7-5). But Hess stormed back and nearly shut out Kurtz the rest of the way for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-0 win to reach the finals against Horne.
The only other Patriots to win their first-round match were No. 1 doubles pair Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans. The duo fought off Jared Stump and Shane Magwire of Angola in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
However, Rigby and Evans fell to Jeff Heller and Ryan Bracey of Bellmont 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the semifinal-round and lost again to Daniel Desper and Caleb Sloan 6-1, 7-6 in the consolation final to place fourth.
No. 2 singles player Joshua Ludy grabbed the only other Jay County win. He defeated Preston Swain of NorthWood in his first match of the consolation bracket after falling to East Noble’s Tyler Derby in his opener. He dropped the fifth-place match to Joe Hammond of Bellmont, 8-7.
Freshman No. 3 singles player Phil Powell and the No. 2 doubles team of Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby each finished 0-2 on the day.[[In-content Ad]]
