Hess wins at DeKalb, Jay Co. finishes 4th (08/23/04)

Local Roundup

The DeKalb Invitational often marks the toughest day of the year for Jay County’s tennis teams. Kurtis Hess helped make it a good one for the boys in 2004.

Hess took the No. 1 singles title as he stayed perfect on the year, and the Patriots placed fourth in the eight-team field with 15 points.

The host Barons dominated the event with 30 points. East Noble was second with 19 points, and NorthWood finished third with 18 points.

Hess, now 5-0 on the season, blanked Norwell’s Michael Huffman 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. He had beaten Huffman by the same score when the teams met in dual meet action Thursday.

Hess defeated Nate Horne of West Noble 6-3, 7-5 in the second round, and went on to top Paul Householder of East Noble 7-5, 6-4 in a pair of hard-fought sets for the title. Hess gave Jay County its first champion at DeKalb since Craig Evans took the No. 1 singles title in 1995.

The Patriot doubles teams each picked up a pair of wins on the day.

At the No. 1 spot, Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby rolled over Angola in the first round 6-1, 6-1 before losing to East Noble 6-1, 6-4 in the second. But, they bounced back in the third round to stop Bellmont 6-1, 6-1 to finish in third place.

Adam Arnold and Travis Smith took a different route to their two wins at No. 2 doubles, dropping the first match 6-3, 6-4 to West Noble. They bounced back to finish fifth with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bellmont and an 8-3 victory over Angola.

Jeff Sims finished 0-2 at No. 2 singles, and Joshua Ludy was 0-2 at No. 3 singles.

Sims fell 6-0, 6-0 to eventual champion Kyle Opeer of DeKalb, and dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Seth Reidenbach of West Noble. Ludy lost 6-1, 6-0 to Northwood’s Thom Kurtz and fell by the same score to Kyle Smith of Angola.

Jay County plays again today at home against Union City at 4:30 p.m.
