The Anderson Indians were bigger, stronger and faster. And they took advantage of all of it.

Anderson used a 21-5 run spanning the first and second quarters Thursday as it rolled to a 66-39 victory to spoil the final home game for the Jay County Patriot girls basketball team.

The Indians (13-6) dominated the glass, repeatedly turning defensive rebounds into transition baskets and offensive rebounds into second-chance scores.

“Our defensive intensity has picked up the last couple games,” said Anderson coach Chad Wetz, whose team held a 43-29 rebounding advantage. “I think we kind of had them guessing a little bit on offense, and shooting shots that they weren’t used to shooting. That helped us get rebounds and go full court the way we like to run.”

Jay County (9-10) trailed just 9-8 after a couple of Cassandra Huelskamp free throws midway through the first quarter, but managed just seven points over the next 10 minutes. The Indians went on a 9-0 run to push its advantage to 22-10. They added another 9-0 run to push to a 34-15 lead with two minutes to go in the opening half and the home team never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

The second 9-0 run followed a Cassandra Huelskamp 3-pointer, the Patriots’ first make from long range after opening 0-for-7. They finished 1-of-14 on 3-pointers.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” said JCHS coach Kirk Comer, whose team hit for just 26 percent from the field overall. “I thought in the first half we had good looks, especially in the first quarter. It was 20-10 at one point and I told the girls, ‘We’re getting the shots, we’re just not hitting the shots.’ If we could’ve hit some of those shots early and gotten a little confidence maybe we could have made it a closer game.”

As it was, Jay County was never able to make a significant run. It trailed by 18 at the half, 21 after three periods and scored just four points in the fourth quarter.

No single player dominated for the Indians as DeJa Wills’ 10 points were a game high. But the Tribe had tremendous balance, with Whitney Clark, LaKeisha Noethtich and Nellie Eskew each scoring nine points and Paige Wooten adding eight.

Danielle Kelly had eight rebounds, Makeba Head had six and Bryesha McCullough and Wooten each had five.

“We’re hard to scout, we’re hard to match up against because we have a very balanced attack,” said Wetz. “The whole year our leading scorer is only averaging 13 points per game.”

Despite the lack of a dominant scorer, Anderson has one of the highest scoring averages in the state at 71.4 points per game.

Sara Garringer’s eight points led the Patriots. Huelskamp scored seven points, and Markie Runyon had six as she and fellow seniors Chelsea DeBoy and Miranda Betz played their final home game.

Runyon added nine rebounds and three blocks, and DeBoy had seven boards. Dana Horn, Betz and Runyon each had a pair of assists.

The loss meant the Patriots will have to wait until next season to score their first win of 2005. They have been mostly on the road since New Year’s Day, losing their only two home games to New Castle and Anderson.

But Comer hopes the aggressive scheduling has paid off.

“I think we’re a better basketball team, there’s no question about it than if we would have played some of the teams we played last year,” he said. “Tonight we had to execute and do things the right way in order to have an opportunity to win, and unfortunately for us we didn’t do enough of those right things.”

Jay County made three changes to its schedule this year, dropping three teams — Indianapolis Howe (0-15), Union of Modoc (0-13) and Muncie Burris (4-11) — with a combined winning percentage of .093. They added Muncie Central (10-8), Coldwater (12-3) and Anderson, who have combined for a .673 winning percentage.

The Patriots play sectional opponents the rest of the way, closing the regular season at Delta Wednesday. The sectional draw will be Sunday, with tournament play beginning Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Jay County was within striking distance after the opening half, but couldn’t keep up in the third quarter in a 48-32 loss to the Indians.

The Patriots, who dropped to 15-4, trailed 19-14 at halftime. Anderson outscored them 16-4 in the third quarter to open its double-digit lead.

Amber Edmundson scored eight points to lead Jay County, and Brittany O’Dell had seven.

Asia Morgan was the only player in double figures as she paced Anderson with 10 points. Bryesha McCullough and Deaddra Taylor each added eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
