High Rollers' rally falls short against Bluffton (01/20/04)

The Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers bowling team made another near-miss comeback this weekend. It fell behind 8-2 early before climbing back, but still lost by an 11-9 final score against Bluffton.

Jesse Shawver and Cody Wright had the top games for the High Rollers on the evening with a 246 and 215 respectively. Shawver notched the high series with a 417 total.

In junior varsity action the High Rollers defeated Marion for the second time this season, 15-5. Brent Kirby rolled the top game and series with a 200 and 385 respectively.

Jay County will take on Huntington North at Villa Lanes in Decatur Wednesday.

Fort freshmen lose

Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team couldn’t match the firepower of St. Johns.

The Indians fell behind 23-9 after one period. They managed just four points in the second quarter and two in the third in the defeat.

Bruce Schoen and Kraig Wendel shared the team-high with five points. Kenton Sudhoff scored four points.

WJ 8th edges Selma

West Jay’s eighth grade girls basketball team mustered a solid second-half effort to pull out a 33-32 victory over Selma Monday. The West Jay seventh graders took a 21-13 loss.

The eighth grade team trailed by four after one quarter and by one at halftime. However, the Eagles outscored Selma 7-3 in the third quarter to take the lead and held on for the win.

Brittany O’Dell scored 15 points to lead West Jay (7-1). Trish Champ followed with 12 points.

West Jay’s seventh graders struggled to put up points, scoring four or fewer in each quarter. Alex Bunch had a team-high five points, and Kelci Reed and Chelsea Grady each added three.

Jay goes to 2-0

Jay County’s Winter Swim Team improved to 2-0 in dual meets this season with a 526-172 victory over Bellmont Monday.

Cori Vormohr led a group of seven triple-event winners as Jay County dominated the meet. It won 75 percent of the individual events, and took 12-of-14 relays in the victory.

Vormohr set her new mark in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.71. She was also first in the butterfly and breaststroke for the 13-and-old girls division.

Justin Klopp added a trio of wins in the 13-and-older boys division in the butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke.

Jay County was dominant in the 9-10-year-old boys division with Wiley Young and Richard Osterholt each grabbing three wins. Young was first in the long freestyle, butterfly and backstroke, and Osterholt took wins in the individual medley, breaststroke and short freestyle.

Laura Bowen picked up victories in the 9-10-year-old girls backstroke, individual medley and breaststroke.

The other triple-event winners for the team were Daniel Velasco in the 8-and-under boys division and Alex Habegger in the 11-12-year-old boys division. Velasco won the long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke, and Habegger took the long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke.[[In-content Ad]]
