High Rollers stun unbeaten Huntington North (01/22/04)

The Huntington North bowling team is unbeaten no more.

The Jay County Blue Jay High Rollers took care of the previously unblemished record Wednesday night by staging a huge comeback to defeat Huntington North 11-9. It was the first time the High Rollers had ever beaten Huntington North.

In what is becoming typical fashion, Jay County fell behind by a score of 8-2 after the first game.

However, the High Rollers (5-4) dominated the second game to score the comeback win. They took the second team game 975-872, and earned four of the five individual points as they handed Huntington North its first loss.

Preston Shoopman and Jesse Shawver shared the high game score on the night with 214s, and Shoopman rolled the high series of 405. Cody Wright and Cory Mock each had 192s for the top score in the first game, and Wright trailed Shoopman and Shawver in the second with a 203.

The vunior varsity squad dropped a 13-7 decision to Huntington North Wednesday.

Kyle Blowers had the high game and series with scores of 211 and 363 respectively.

The next action for Jay County will be at Marion Saturday against South Adams.

Eagles drop pair

West Jay’s boys basketball teams ran into a couple of tough Monroe Central squads Wednesday night. The eighth grade squad dropped a 52-47 contest, and the seventh grade team suffered a 40-24 defeat.

The Eagle eighth graders (10-6) were within one point after a quarter, but were outscored 24-14 over the next two periods on the way to the defeat. Luke Goetz and Brandon Buckland each scored 13 points, and Dustin Fox followed with 11.

West Jay’s seventh grade team (8-8) managed just four points in the second quarter and two in the third in the defeat. Blake Price scored 14 points for the Eagles.

Bloomfield downs Haynes

Bloomfield scored a couple of wins over Judge Haynes in elementary boys basketball action Wednesday. Bloomfield’s A team took a 49-14 victory, and the B team defeated Judge Haynes 26-14.

Eric Homan paced the Bloomfield A team with 24 points. Brad Horn had 13 points, and Kyle Markle finished with eight.

Harley Arnold and Carlos Esquival added six points apiece for Judge Haynes.

Colton Bartlett led Bloomfield’s B team with 16 points. Adam Mescher was next with four points.

Skyler Petty had six points for Judge Haynes, and Aaron Thomas added four.

Volleyball to start again

The off-season travel volleyball campaign for fifth through eighth grade Jay County girls will begin with a meeting and practice Sunday, Jan. 25.

The event will be held at the East Jay Middle School gym, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

There will be a question-and-answer session for parents and players from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Registration forms may also be filled out at that time.

Practice will follow from 2 to 3:45 p.m.

EJ tourney

The East Jay Middle School boys basketball tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, the same day as the girls tournament.

Girls tournament games will begin at 8 a.m., and the boys first round will start at 10:30 p.m.

The East Jay seventh grade girls will open against Yorktown at 8 a.m., and the eighth grade girls will take on Monroe Central at 9:15 a.m.

The Chiefs’ eighth grade boys will play Frankton, with the seventh grade team taking on Hartford City. Both East Jay boys first-round games will start at 10:30 a.m.

Championship games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Fort rescheduled

Fort Recovery has announced several schedule changes for its boys basketball teams.

The junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams will host Houston Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

The freshman boys basketball team’s game at Versailles has been changed to Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. The junior high boys teams will host St. Mary’s Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m.

AAU tryouts

Tryouts for the Jay County fifth grade AAU boys basketball team will be Sunday, Jan. 25. They will be held at the Jay County High School gym from Noon to 2 p.m.
