Holiday Inn grand opening is today (09/13/2008)

Portland's Holiday Inn Express and Suites will hold its grand opening today.

The celebration will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. at the hotel, 100 Holiday Drive. The three-floor, 73-room facility offers amenities such as a 24-hour fitness center and heated indoor pool for guests.

It also has a conference center.

The hotel opened for guests at the beginning of August, playing host to the big name entertainment at the Jay County Fair.

Stay Jay Hotels LLC, owners and operators of the new hotel, received financing from the U.S. Small Business Administration 504 loan program through the Bank of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, N.M., and the Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corporaiton.

Scott Daniels is president of Stay Jay Hotels, and Sue Waples is general manager of the new hotel. The hotel employs about 20 people.

New executive director

Dave Kinder has been named executive director of Community and Family Services, succeeding Larry Braden who left the organization earlier this year after 18 years at its helm.

Kinder, 53, has most recently worked as executive director of the United Way of Whitley County and as housing director of Region 3A Planning and Development in Kendallville.

Originally from Logansport, he and his wife Tammy now live in northwest Allen County.

For nine years, Kinder worked as director of housing at Area 5 Agency on Aging and Community Services Inc. in Logansport. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in business management, both from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Staff shift

The Bluffton News-Banner is switching some staff members into new roles after the retirement of long-time employee Joe Smekens.

Dave Schultz will begin as assistant editor. Schultz worked with the Huntington Herald Press for 23 years before joining the News-Banner staff. He will help to oversee the editorial staff and news coverage.

Also moving into a new role is Glen Werling, who will take over the duties of managing editor. A 20-year employee with the News-Banner, Werling has covered several news beats during his term.

Cheers to 20 Years

Distributors from Geneva of a health products company helped celebrate 20 years in business.

Jim and Lesa Neal and Phil and Denise Vorhees, distributors for Reliv International celebrated at the "Cheers to 20 Years" conference in St. Louis, Mo.

The company works to provide complex nutritional products to people everywhere. Reliv fields about 69,000 distributors in 13 nations.

Monday deadline

The last day to register for "Economic Development 101," a class being held at Ball State, is Monday.

The program, which will cover the basics of economic development, will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Alumni Center at Ball State.

The event is hosted by Energize-ECI Inc and the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center.

Hurricane relief

Jay County REMC was part of an aid effort to restore power to Louisana following Hurrican Gustav.

Members of the power cooperative went along with 22 other Indiana groups on Sept. 4 to bring electricity back to the hurricane-rocked area. About 1.5 million people were left without power after the storm plowed through the area. Work was expected to take 4 to 6 weeks.

Ethanol plant

A new ethanol plant will begin operations in North Manchester this month.

POET LLC announced the opening of a new plant, which will produce about 65 million gallons of ethanol per year. POET also boasts a plant in Portland which began production a year ago and a third Indiana plant near Alexandria.[[In-content Ad]]
