Homemakers have fun (10/31/03)
Guest Opinion

I am proud to be a member of the Indiana Extension Homemakers Association. Please come along as we go for a ride on the Jay County Extension train.
All aboard!!! First stop, the beautiful Jay County Fairgrounds and the 4-H Building. What do we smell? It’s food coming from the kitchen. Let’s look inside. There is Pauline Sells and Twilo Cline, co-chairmen, and all those ladies fixing good food.
Hey! Someone is calling to us from the Women’s Building. Wonder what they want? Why, it is Phyllis Johnson and Helen Gillum, co-chairmen of the Women’s Building. They want us to look at all the exhibits on display. Oh, there are all those extension ladies again. Boy, they are busy.
All aboard for a short trip around town. Let me tell you about our year-round projects. In the “First Book” program we read a book to the children at the two county Head Start locations and then each child gets to take home a copy of the book. We make quilts that we send to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. We send items to the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis. We help with the Buddy Walk and Meals on Wheels in both Portland and Dunkirk.
All aboard!!! Next stop, the Jay County Public Library. Great building! Let’s go inside and see what’s going on. Someone wants us to go to the room on the left. There is a lesson going on. Let’s listen for a few minutes. It’s a lesson on driving decision in later life. Now we leave this great place for our next stop.
All aboard for the 4-H Building. Oh, it’s Craft Day. Let’s go see. There is Barbara Bruner and Janice Bubp, co-chairmen. Just look at all those dealers and crafters teaching their make-and-take crafts. They’re lots of fun. There’s all those extension homemakers hard at work as always.
Let me tell you about one of our lessons, like Organ Procurement by Linda Peters. She has a doll named Maggie she wants to show us. It shows all the organs of the body and the other things that can be used for transplants.
After a short trip around the beautiful Jay County Fairgrounds we are back at the 4-H Building. Wonder what is going on now? It’s Norma Bickel and her committee presenting great holiday gift ideas. There’s Karen Alexander with her committee fixing food for us to taste. We are full of good ideas and food for the holidays. Can’t beat that. Those ladies have such good ideas and have a lot of fun.
All aboard!!! On our trip back to Portland, we have had lessons like Pantry Cooking and Money after 50.
These are just a few of the things that Jay County Extension Homemakers have been involved with over the past few years. Come and join us any time. We enjoy meeting new people, learning new things and helping others.
Stop in at the office at 504 W. Arch St., Portland, or call (260) 726-4707.
