Hoosier State delegates selected (06/03/08)

Taking Note

Paige Beaty and Thomasina O'Conner were chosen by the Dunkirk American Legion Auxiliary No. 227 as Hoosier Girls State Delegates and will attend the 66th annual session of Hoosier Girls State June 22 to 28 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Paige, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Beaty, is a junior at Jay County High School.

Thomasina, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen O'Conner, is also a junior at Jay County High School.

Hoosier Girls State is a government program designed to educate leaders of tomorrow in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Bookspeak

Indiana Public Radio is looking for readers to voice their reflections of a recent book read by writing a book review for BookSpeak, a 5 minute program broadcast Wednesdays in June and July.

Reviews must be 350 words or two minutes when read aloud , be of interesting subject matter and include passion and enthusiasm.

Boys State

Mason Murphy and Lance Louth were chosen as Hoosier Boys State Delegates and will attend Indiana State University June 14 to 21 in Terre Haute.

Murphy is the son of Mitch and Anna Murphy. He is the vice-president of Key Club, treasurer of the German Club and Sgt. of Arms of Student Council at Jay County High School. He is also involved in FFA and wrestling.

Louth is the son of Brian and Kay Louth. He is involved in German Club, soccer and football.

The Boys State program is a learning experience in the theory, organization, and practical application of the process of our democratic form of government.

Reading group

The Book Reading Group will discuss "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett on Monday, June 16, at Jay County Public Library.

The book is set in 12th century England and concerns the building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge.

The group meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the library. To register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.



Jay County Reads

"Icy Sparks" by Gwyn Hyman Rudio will be the next book to read for the Jay County Reads program in September at Jay County Public Library.

The novel centers around Tourette's Syndrome and its effects on a young girl growing up in Eastern Kentucky in the 1950's.

Summer reading

The Fort Recovery Public Library will begin its Summer Reading Program on June 9, when a calendar of information will be available at the library. When books are checked out, a library bag will be given with treats, games, crafts and a schedule of special programs.

Some of the special events include fingerprinting by chief of police Jared Laux and a program on honey bees by Dr. Eric Nelson.

Middle school students will receive a chance to win an MP3 player by reading five books and prizes will be given to teens and adults who participate.
