Horn scores 4 vs. Eagles

JCHS roundup

MUNCIE - The Patriots are on a steady climb.

In its opening game, the Jay County High School boys soccer team suffered a shutout. They won their second 3-1, and Thursday night the offense doubled that goal total in a 6-1 thrashing of the host Delta Eagles.

Brad Horn, who had two goals in Tuesday's win over New Castle, again led the Patriots. He wasted little time, scoring twice in the first 1:18 of the game on assists from Patrick Johnson and Ben Brandt.

Johnson needed just another 95 seconds to score and push JCHS (2-1) to a 3-0 lead. Brandt added a goal off of an assist from Jeremiah Cotherman, and Horn scored for a third time on a pass from Aldo Castro with 1:30 left in the opening half.

Delta finally got on the board in the second half, and Horn added his fourth goal of the game on another Johnson assist.

Goalie Adam Daniels faced no shots on goal in the opening half, and Carlos Esquivel made two saves in the second half.

Denney shoots 39

RICHMOND - Playing one of the best teams in the state did not intimidate Abby Denney.

The Jay County junior posted the best dual-match score of her career Thursday with a 39 in the Patriot girls golf team's 151-188 loss to the No. 5 Richmond Red Devils.

Denney, who also shot 39 on the back nine Aug. 10 at the Marion Invitational, caught fire at the end of her round. She played the final four holes at 1-under-par, recording three pars and a birdie on the par-4 16th hole.

She also had a birdie on the par-4 12th, and added three bogeys to finish at 3-over-par.

Defending state champion Trisha Witherby, a Richmond junior, earned medalist honors with a 35.

Cara Garringer parred two of the final three holes for a 46, and Macey Gerber had five bogeys in her round of 49. Brittany Stevens completed the team score for Jay County (4-1) with a 54, and Alysia Fennig shot 64.

In junior varsity action, Whitney Gray shot 55, Cortney Myers had a 68 and Emily Morris finished at 70.

Netters fall to Knights

FOUNTAIN CITY - Rain halted Thursday's tennis action, but not quickly enough to stop the Knights.

Two matches went unfinished because of rain, but the Jay County boys tennis team still suffered a 3-0 loss to host Northeastern.

The No. 2 doubles pair of Joe Imel and Derek Smith played the closest of the completed matches for the Patriots (1-3), falling 6-4, 6-2 to Ryan Hester and Jeremy Lacey. Jared Valentine lost 6-2, 6-3 to Derek Blunk at No. 1 singles, and Brad Leuthold fell 6-2, 6-2 against Zeth Ellis at No. 2 singles.

Austin Cowan and Chance Fuller dropped a first-set tiebreaker and trailed Nick Austerman and Lucas Fleming 3-1 in the second set at No. 1 doubles when the match was called. Tylor Smith lost the first set 6-2 to Jake Terhaar at No. 3 singles and the second set was tied 1-1.[[In-content Ad]]
