Horn's two goals lead JC

Three games into the season, the Patriots are already two-thirds of the way to their 2010 win total.
With senior LeAnn Horn leading the way Tuesday, the Jay County High School girls soccer team defeated the visiting Connersville Spartans 3-0.
Horn scored twice for the Patriots (2-1), who were just 3-10-3 with 10 goals a year ago. They have scored seven times in three games thus far this season.
Horn’s first goal of the season iced the game for the Patriots, as she took a pass from Sammi Compton and sent her shot to the left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead with just 10:13 remaining. She scored again off of a Compton assist less than two minutes later for the final margin.
After a scoreless first half, Compton notched the game’s first goal off an assist from Amber Huelskamp. Her fourth goal of the season gave Jay County the lead for good 11:56 into the second half.
Jay County and Connersville finished in a scoreless tie in the junior varsity game. Brooke Reynard totaled three saves for the Patriots (0-0-2), and Carmen Lopez took two shots on goal.

Hornaday leads Jay
Jay County’s volleyball team knocked off its second Adams County foe in as many nights Tuesday, defeating the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets 25-19, 25-19, 10-25, 25-15.
Mariah Hornaday led the Patriots (4-2), who swept South Adams Monday, with 12 kills, eight digs, five blocks and three aces.
Hannah Ainsworth added 29 assists and eight points.
Alyssa Rigby had 12 digs and scored seven points on 13-of-13 serving, Malarie Houck added 12 points and Maria Murphy notched nine kills.
The JCHS junior varsity squad won its first game before fading to a 17-25, 25-14, 15-10 defeat. Ali Inman had eight points for the Patriots, Ashley Motter and Bailey Weatherhead each totaled eight digs and Katie Aker added four kills.

SA girls soccer falls
BERNE — The South Adams girls soccer team gave up four first-half goals Tuesday on the way to a 7-1 loss to the visiting Bellmont Squaws.

The Starfires (0-4) trailed 4-0 before sophomore Erika Miller got them on the board. She scored early in the second half on an assist from Rachel Simon.
South Adams finished with four shots on goal, including two from Simon. Brianna Nevil finished with 13 saves.

JC boys soccer loses
NEW CASTLE — The Patriot boys soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday by a 3-1 score to the New Castle Trojans.
Jay County (0-1-2), which tied Muncie Central and Heritage in its first two games, fell behind 10 minutes into Tuesday’s contest when New Castle converted a penalty kick. The Trojans (3-1-1) added two more goals in the second half for a 3-0 lead before the Patriots got on the board.
Alex Dunn scored the lone goal of the game for JCHS on a penalty kick with 17 minutes remaining.
Austin Cowan had five saves for the Patriots.

Star spikers stumble
BERNE — South Adams’ volleyball team suffered a sweep for the second straight night Tuesday, losing 25-17, 25-21, 27-25 to the visiting Eastbrook Panthers.
The Starfires, who fell in three games Monday to Jay County, got 12 assists, 10 digs and three kills from sophomore Alyssa Bluhm. Lauren Smith added 13 digs.
SAHS won the junior varsity match 20-25, 25-23, 15-14 with seven digs, four assists and three kills from Mackenzie Jennings.

Jay JV gridders win
The Jay County junior varsity football team won its season opener Monday 22-16 over the visiting Delta Eagles.
The Patriots controlled the game on the ground, getting two rushing touchdowns from Chase Louck. Wesley Hibbard added one TD through the air along with a pair of two-point conversions.[[In-content Ad]]
