Hornsby set to speak (11/21/07)

Jeff Hornsby, the Ball State University professor who shepherded through Jay County's ongoing efforts to establish a countywide chamber of commerce, will be the featured speaker at the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce networking luncheon at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 27, in conference rooms A and B of Jay County Hospital.

Businesses invited

Jay County Emergency Management is opening its next class of technical rescue training to Jay County businesses in an effort to develop a technical rescue team.

Companies are invited to send one or more employees to the session.

The training will be conducted Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24 and 25, at the Jay County Courthouse. It's a 12-hour program funded by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association.

Wal-Mart profits up

Wal-Mart has reported better than expected results in the third quarter and expects fourth-quarter earnings to be at the high end of earlier predictions.

Sales at Wal-Mart's international division rose 17 percent.

For the quarter which ended Oct. 31, Wal-Mart's revenue rose 8.9 percent. The company expects fourth-quarter earnings of between 99 cents and $1.03 per share.

Trees for Troops

Holly Pines, a season Christmas tree business in rural Bryant, is participating again this year in the national Trees for Troops program.

Beginning last week, trees from Christmas tree farms in Indiana were being cut for delivery to the Navy 5th Fleet and Coast Guard stationed out of the country of Bahrain. Trees will also be delivered to troops and their families at bases in the U.S.

A total of 210 trees will come from Indiana, while more than 11,000 trees are being donated nationally.

Some opposition

A proposed ethanol plant east of Celina has stirred up some opposition, with longtime zoning inspector Brice Blair resigning from his position in part because of the plant's site.

The plant, being developed by Mercer Energy, a local company, is planned for a site along Albers Road near Ohio 29.

Tyson earnings down

Tyson Foods Inc. has reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings below investor expectations. The Springdale, Ark., company cited disappointing results from its beef business as the key.

Abatement approved

Central State Enterprises, Montpelier, has won approval for tax abatements for two planned new storage units.

The company, which buys grain from area farmers, plans one 4 million bushel storage unit and another 2 million bushel unit. With the additional units, Central State will have 13 million in storage capacity at Montpelier.

Deadline extended

The deadline for a class on presentation skills being offered by Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne at South Adams has been extended. The class will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at South Adams High School. The cost is $111, and the course awards .35 Continuing Education Units.

Auctioneers certified

Auctioneers Nathan Springer, Pennville, and Bart Darby, Portland, have been certified by the Auctioneers' Society of Certified Appraisers as personal property appraisers.

The two have been trained in appraisal techniques for household goods, antiques, glassware, and automobiles.[[In-content Ad]]
