Hosier to down hot stuff for CASA (06/21/08)

Portland's mayor has agreed to compete in a jalapenos eating contest as a fundraiser for a community program.
Community Affairs and Spanish Assistance, "CASA de Portland", will be hosting the jalapeno eating contest Monday, June 30, at El Camino Real Restaurant, 220 W. Lincoln Ave., Portland.
The event will be part of a fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. to help the program raise some money. Mayor Bruce Hosier has agreed to participate in the pepper eating contest.

Wal-Mart cuts back
on openings
The major wholesale retail company is peeling back nationwide plans to open more stores.
Wal-Mart rolled back its forecasted expenditures between $500 million and $1.2 billion for the remainder of the fiscal year, slicing back its planned new store openings.
Wal-Mart posted higher than expected sales figures last month despite economic speculation. Despite other chains experiencing some turbulence in the market, Wal-Mart has experienced continued success in its field.
Food bank
seeking donations
Weather woes have strained supplies for area food banks, which are now calling for more donations.
Midwest Food Bank is looking for help from area residents to help replenish stores depleted in efforts to aid people affected by tornadoes and flooding around the state.
Crown Pointe of Hartford City, 100 Independence Parkway, will serve as a drop point for donations until June 30. Helpful donations include canned or boxed food items and basic toiletries.
OB unit upgrade
Bluffton Regional Medical Center will be seeing a $3.2 million upgrade to its obstetrics ward by next spring.
Plans were approved to give a facelift to the birthing center at the hospital as the final stage of about $20 million renovations to the facility since 2001.
The upgrade will create a major space expansion for the OB unit, creating four labor delivery recovery postpartum rooms which will allow mothers to deliver and recover within the same space and not have to change rooms.
The current OB unit will be crafted into seven multi-purpose rooms as sort of an auxiliary wing if needed.
100 years
A family owned shop in Berne is celebrating 100 years in business.
Sprunger Shoes in downtown Berne has been through three generations in its trek toward 100 years of business. Purchased July 1, 1908 by Ben Sprunger, the shoe shop is now owned by his grandson Kenyon Sprunger. The store offers adult shoes for casual, dress and walking wear.
Star-studded opening
Menards in Celina, Ohio, is celebrating a grand opening with a collection of celebrity appearances.
The grand opening celebration for the store at 1920 Havemann Road, will begin June 28 and last until July 6. During the nine-day event, shoppers can view product demonstrations and have a chance to win prizes.
On June 28, chainsaw artist John Gage will be at the store from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. His carvings will be available for sale throughout the day. IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter, fifth place finisher at the 2008 Indy 500, will stop in from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 1.
All-star Cincinnati Reds outfielder George Foster will be on hand July 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. to meet with customers. And Ohio State and NFL running back Keith Byars will close out the round of appearances on July 2 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Jobs slashed
in Decatur
A major employer in Decatur cut 300 jobs last week.
Fleetwood Enterprises, a manufacturer of RVs, cut 300 jobs June 13 at its Decatur plant. The layoffs came as part of 600 dropped jobs across eight plants.
The plant, at US 224 East, still has about 700 employees at work. Most of the job cuts came in motor home production, with some in development and parts and service.
Economic development
A Munice-based development firm is teaming up with a site location specialistic.
Energize-ECI, Inc., an economic development firm, is working with the Site Location Partnership, from Dallas, Tex., to help attract new or relocating manufacturing outfits to the area. SLP is offering internet marketing to Energize-ECI to better promote the region is the business market.

East central Indiana sent two representatives to a major biotechnology conference in San Diego.
Valerie Shaffer, manager of business attraction, and Tracey van Niekerk, life sciences coordinator, for the Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County attended the BIO International Convention in San Diego June 17-20. The global biotech event boasted around 20,000 participants and 2,300 companies.

The June issue of Indiana Business magazine outlining the largest Indiana companies includes a some local names.
Four companies ranked in the top 50 for largest public groups, including: Old National Bancorp., Evansville, No. 24; Franklin Electric, Bluffton, No. 25; First Merchants Corp., Munice, No. 36; and MainSource Financial, Greensburg, No. 42.
