Host Delta overpowers Jay County track teams (04/14/06)

MUNCIE — The wins were few and far between for the Jay County track teams Thursday.

The Patriot girls squad picked up two victories, finishing second to Delta in a three-team meet with 49 points. The host Eagles were first with 70.5, and the Yorktown Tigers were third with 37.5.

Mason Shreve earned the lone win for the boys team, which was third with 36 points. Delta finished first with 66 points, four ahead of Yorktown.

Both wins for the girls team came in field events. Junior Sara Garringer was first in the discus at 82 feet, eight inches, and freshman Lindsey Current won the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.

Shreve finished first in the 110-meter hurdles for the boys team by 13 hundredths of a second in 18.03 seconds.

FR falls to Ansonia, Houston

FORT RECOVERY — Marissa Brunswick and Adam Rohrer earned the lone victories for the Fort Recovery junior high track teams as they hosted a three-way meet Thursday.

The Indians were third in both competitions with 23 points for the girls and 22.5 for the boys with Ansonia first (99 and 74.5) and Houston second (33 and 60).

Brunswick edged Erica Ritchie of Ansonia for the lone girls win, finishing the 100-meter dash in 14.20 seconds to win by 11 hundredths.

Rohrer’s victory came in the shot put by six inches with a toss of 35 feet, one inch.

EJ girls top Richmond

Kari Hemmelgarn, Jordan McMillan and Caitlin Gilbert each won three events to lead the East Jay girls track team to an 81-12 destruction of Richmond Dennis. Tevan Nichols picked up two of the three wins for the Chief boys team, which tied Dennis 50-50.

Gilbert again dominated the shot put and discus with distances of 25 feet, six inches and 60 feet, one inch respectively. Hemmelgarn won the hurdles in 18.17 seconds and the 400-meter run in 1-minute, 15.41 seconds, and McMillan was first in the 200 dash in 28.88 and the long jump with a leap of 12 feet, nine inches.

Nichols rolled to a win by more than 10 seconds in the 800 run in 2:30.20, and took first in the 1,600 run by more than 20 seconds with a time of 5:35.75.

Other wins for the girls team came from Katie Simmons in the 1,600 run (6:35.16), Katie Butcher in the 800 run (2:50.06) and Kelsey Wood in the high jump (4 feet, 11 inches). The Chiefs also took first in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Brandon Brinton earned the only other win in the discus (103 feet, two inches), and East Jay also took first in the 4x400 relay.

Mallory Poole won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and the high jump to lead the girls B team to a 90-6 win, and Austin Cowen took first in the long jump and high jump as the boys B team won 73-27.[[In-content Ad]]
