Houck, Burkett lead the Chiefs

MONROE — For the second straight night, Jay Houck and Ryan Burkett scored in double figures.
Houck and Burkett led the East Jay Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team to a 46-23 victory Tuesday over the Adams Central Flying Jets, a night after the Chiefs opened the season with a dramatic comeback win against Norwell.
The seventh grade team dropped to 0-2 with a 22-20 loss.
Houck finished with 16 points for the East Jay eighth graders, who improved to 2-0 on the season. Burkett added 14 points.
Dylan Martin added six points for the Chiefs, and Jason Schlosser scored four.
Ethan Myers led the way for the EJMS seventh grade team (0-2) with 14 points. Caden Stant followed with four points, and Collin Haines scored two.

WJMS boys fall
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team suffered a loss in its season opener Tuesday, falling 44-33 to the visiting South Adams Starfires.
Dakota Grove set the pace for the Eagles as he finished with 14 points.
Spencer Calvert joined him in double figures with 10 points, and Andrew Trewyn added five.

Keen, Hathaway lead
NEW CASTLE — James Keen and Erica Hathaway each earned high-point honors in their age groups for the Jay County Winter Swim Team at Saturday’s New Castle Fall Invitational.
Keen won the 13-and-older boys 100-yard freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke. Hathaway won the 9-10-year-old girls 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 individual medley.
Lillian Clemmons and Leah Hummel added four more victoires in the 9-10-year-old girls division, with Clemmons taking the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle and Hummel winning the 50 butterfly and 200 individual medley. JamieAnn Lewis was first in the 8-and-younger girls 25 backstroke and 25 freestyle, and Josh Lykins won the 13-and-older boys 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.[[In-content Ad]]
