Jay County roundup

GENEVA - Drew Houck put up his best 18-hole score Saturday for the Jay County High School boys golf team at the South Adams Invitational.

Houck shot 84 as the Patriots finished seventh out of nine teams at Golf Club of the Limberlost with a total of 396. The host Starfires were last with a 404.

Back-to-back pars on the first and second holes got Houck off to a good start, and he added a third par on No. 9 to make the turn with a 44. He opened the back nine with a birdie on the 405-yard, par-4 10th hole, and picked up a second birdie on the 120-yard, par-3 15th.

Houck closed his round with back-to-back pars as well for his team-best score and an eighth-place finish overall.

South Adams' best score came from Mark Smith, who finished with a 90.

Evan Ryder posted the No. 2 score for the Patriots with a 103, and Austin Mann had one par in his round of 104. Seth Ainsworth completed the team score with a 105, and Mitchel Rigby shot 112.

Following smith for the Starfires were Mark Muselman (102), Stuart Poulson (103) and Alex Habegger (109).

Waters wins 2nd

SALA BAGANZA, Italy - Mitch Waters, a 2002 JCHS graduate, picked up his second win in the Serie A2 Italian baseball league.

Waters dominated Bancaetruria Arezzo Sunday, shutting the team out on just four hits and a walk as he tossed a complete game. He struck out four batters to improve to 2-1. The former Portland Rocket has a 0.39 ERA and has struck out 14 batters in 23 innings.

Baseball falls to Scots

ANDERSON - The Patriots missed out on their last chance to pick up a victory against Anderson Highland, which will close after this year, losing 10-0 in six innings and 12-8 to the Scots in a double-header Saturday.

Highland scored three times in the first inning of its 10-0 victory over JCHS and limited the Patriots to just four hits, two of which came from senior Willie Mayfield. Mike Masters took the loss as he gave up the 10 runs on seven hits and two walks in 5-plus innings.

Jay County led the other contest 2-0 through two innings, and the game was tied at 3-3 after the fourth. But the Scots racked up six runs in the fifth inning to take control.

Michael Daniels had two hits and two runs for the Patriots (4-6, 1-3 Olympic Athletic Conference), and Chance Fuller added two hits and two RBIs. Jon Pettus and Mayfield added two hits apiece.

Ty Huntsman took the loss, giving up nine runs - seven earned - on three hits and eight walks in four innings.
