Hudson joins group of state qualifiers from Jay Co. (03/08/05)

FORT WAYNE — Mary Hudson added her name to the list of state qualifiers as the Jay County Winter Swim Team competed at the Fort Wayne divisional swim meet this weekend.
Hudson earned a state qualifying time in the 9-10-year-old girls 50-yard breaststroke. She will swim at the state meet March 18-20 along with teammates Aaron Hudson, Sam Miller, Justin Klopp, Perry Hull and Cori Vormohr, all of whom had previously qualified.
Also at the Fort Wayne meet, Michaela Long set a personal-best time as she finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
Pfeifer takes first
Cameron Pfeifer earned the first title for the Patriot Wrestling Club this year as he finished first at the Jimtown Folkstyle meet Sunday.
Pfeifer finished with a 4-0 record to win the 90-pound championship. Tom Smith went 3-1 for a second-place finish at 189 pounds, and Justin Mann took third at 140 pounds by going 2-2. Casey Kenney (95) finished 2-2 and placed fourth.
The club also competed at Terre Haute Saturday and at Leo Feb. 28. Kurt Hess (152) was second at both meets with a combined 7-2 record, and Pfeifer added a second-place effort at Leo by going 2-1.
Junior league
Sign-up sessions for the upcoming Portland Junior League season will be held on each of the next three Saturdays.
Those interested in signing up to play baseball or softball this summer can do so at the Junior League diamonds at Weiler-Wilson Park March 12, 19 or 26 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The leagues are for boys and girls ages six through 15.
Volleyball camps
Purdue University will hold three volleyball camps in July
The first camp is an elite hitter/setter/libero camp for players ages 14-18, which is scheduled for July 8-10. It will be followed by a general skills camp for ages 11-18 from July 11-13 and a team camp/coaches clinic for high school players from July 15-18.
