Hudson will swim at state

Local roundup

INDIANAPOLIS - Mary Hudson will swim in the state meet.

The Jay County High School sophomore's berth in the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals became official Monday evening when the final two sectional meets were contested. Her school-record time of 1:08.57 in the 100-yard breaststroke was good enough to earn her one of the provisional spots in the state field of 32 swimmers.

Hudson will compete at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis Friday at 6 p.m.

Patriot junior Megan Taylor will compete for a state berth Wednesday at the diving regional meet at Hamilton Southeastern.

Taylor finished second at the sectional meet hosted by Jay County with 311.75 points. She will be the No. 17 seed for the regional meet, just five hundredths of a point behind Brittany Vincent of Maconaquah.

The top four competitors from the regional will earn a trip to the state finals. Gail Susdorf, who finished seventh in the state last season, is the No. 1 seed after posting a score of 505.2 in sectional action.

Sectional shifted

The Class 4A girls basketball sectional hosted by Jay County has been postponed because of snow.

The opening round, which was scheduled for tonight, will now be played Friday. The Patriots will play Marion in the first game Friday at 6 p.m. with the game between Homestead and Fort Wayne North Side to follow.

The semifinal round will be Saturday, with the Jay County/Marion winner to play Fort Wayne South Side at 6 p.m. Huntington North will meet the Homestead/North Side winner in the second semifinal game at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game will be Monday at 7 p.m.

Wrestlers get chance

INDIANAPOLIS - The IHSAA announced in a press release Monday that wrestlers who were unable to attend Saturday's regional meet hosted by Jay County will get another chance to compete.

Fourteen wrestlers from Randolph County schools Winchester, Randolph Southern, Union City and Monroe Central will wrestle in "pigtail" matches at the semi-state meet Saturday in Fort Wayne against semi-state qualifiers from the Jay County regional. Winners of those matches will then advance into the regular semi-state tournament.

The decision effects four area wrestlers - Matt James and Kyle Garringer of Jay County and T.J. Burnfield and Nick Taylor of South Adams.

James (36-6) gets the toughest assignment of the group as he will wrestle Winchester's Andrew Chalfant (33-4), the 215-pound sectional champion at Delta, in the "pigtail" round of the semi-state Saturday. Garringer (26-15) will take on Steve Thomas (22-9) of Monroe Central in the 189-pound bracket.

Burnfield (36-7) will meet Kevin Dines (23-13) of Winchester at the semi-state at 140 pounds, and Taylor (27-10) will battle Randolph Southern's Steve Phillips (20-8) in the 171-pound tournament.

Jay girls set records

The Jay County middle school girls swim team set three records Tuesday as it opened the season with a 186-123 victory over the Delta Eagles. The boys team lost, 158-97.

Anne Vormohr was a part of all three records, setting the mark in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 6.46 seconds. She teamed with Sophie Bader, Caitlin Mark and Katie Smeltzer for record times of 1:51.93 in the 200 freestyle relay and 2:02.95 in the 200 medley relay.

Bader, Mark, Smeltzer and Rhianon Mills all added individual victories.

Zane Shreve had the lone individual win for the boys team. He also joined Sok Vormohr, Evan Mathias and Calvin Schricker for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay.[[In-content Ad]]
