Collegiate check-up
Thanks in large part to Cameron Hummel, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is having just the kind of season it hoped for.
Hummel had another outstanding game Sept. 24, leading the Engineers in rushing and passing in a 45-13 rout of Oberlin College.
Rose-Hulman has not had a winning season since 1995, and has been .500 just once since then. That came with a 5-5 mark in Hummel’s freshman season, but the junior quarterback has the squad off-and-running at 3-1 as they prepare to host Division III No. 12 Trinity today.
The highlight of the victory over Oberlin was Hummel’s 75-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career, in the second quarter. He finished with 86 yards on the ground, leading the team to a total of 248 rushing yards.
He also finished 7-of-17 passing for 178 yards.
Hummel has gone 40-of-79 passing in four games this year for 551 yards and a touchdown. He also has 260 yards on the ground with three touchdowns, and has a touchdown reception.
Joscie Kaup
The 2004 Fort Recovery graduate followed up her season-high 18 digs against Colgate with 38 in the next three matches for the Syracuse University volleyball team.
Kaup, the libero, had 15 digs and one ace Sunday in a victory over South Florida. She totaled 10 digs and three aces as the Orange defeated Georgetown Sept. 23.
She also had 13 digs as Syracuse dropped a 33-31, 14-30, 30-28, 11-30, 15-12 thriller to Siena Wednesday. She added one assist and three aces.
Kaup currently ranks eighth in the 16-team Big East in aces with 0.43 per game and ninth in digs with 3.67 per game. Syracuse is now 10-5 on the season.
Jill Roughia
The 2005 graduate of Jay County was the No. 3 runner for the Huntington College women’s cross country team as it finished 20th out of 24 teams at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota Sept. 24.
Roughia finished 120th overall with a time of 26-minutes, 12 seconds. She was behind teammates Molly Andrews (100th - 25:33) and Emily Sealscott (11th - 26:00).
Sara Hough
A 2004 Jay County graduate, she helped the Ancilla College volleyball team to a 6-2 record over its last eight matches.
Hough anchored the defense as the Chargers (14-10) went 3-2 at a two-day tournament at Kankakee Community College Sept. 23 and 24. She racked up 96 kills in the five matches, including 24 apiece against Rock Valley Community College and host Kankakee.
She also had a team-best 21 aces in the tournament.
The sophomore’s best match outside of the tournament came Sept. 22 in a 30-23, 30-25, 30-28 victory over Muskegon. She had 21 kills and four aces, both team highs.
Hough, who ranks 26th in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association in digs, added 17 digs and four aces in a victory over Grand Rapids Community College. She had 12 digs and four aces as Ancilla defeated Lake Michigan College.
Candace Northam
The 2002 Jay County graduate and the St. Joseph women’s tennis team had a tough week, losing 8-1 to Lewis University Tuesday.
Northam dropped her singles match 6-1, 6-1 to Katie Popp. She and teammate Christie Van Eyk lost a tight match, 8-6, to Erin Piechocinski and Stacie Christensen at No. 2 doubles.[[In-content Ad]]
