Collegiate check-up
It’s official. Cameron Hummel has picked up his first collegiate award.
Hummel, a 2003 Jay County graduate, was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his effort in a victory Saturday, Nov. 8 over DePauw.
The freshman starting quarterback led the Rose-Hulman Engineers to a 22-12 win with his most outstanding effort of the year. It was his team’s first win over the Tigers since the 1995 season.
Hummel scored all three of his team’s touchdowns in the victory, including one on a 61-yard run in the second period.
With his team trailing 12-7 late in the third quarter, he found the end zone again on a 1-yard run to give the Engineers the lead. He sealed the victory with a 9-yard scoring run with less than two minutes to go in the contest.
Hummel led the team in rushing and passing. He carried the ball 22 times for 128 yards, and hit 14-of-22 passing attempts for 235 yards with no interceptions.
For the season Hummel ranks fourth in the SCAC in total offense at 187.7 yards per game. He has completed 106 of 219 passes for 1,255 yards and nine touchdowns.
He is also the Engineers’ No. 2 rusher, having carried the ball 101 times for 577 yards and seven touchdowns.
Hummel has Rose-Hulman sitting at 5-4 on the season, with a chance to secure its first winning season since 1995. A win over conference-leading Centre today would earn the Engineers a tie for second place in the SCAC.
Michael finishes on top
Anderson University’s volleyball team got knocked out in the second round of the Heartland County Athletic Conference tournament, but Jay County graduate Libby Michael still finished atop the league in digs. For her efforts, Michael earned All-HCAC second team honors.
