Hummel, Reinhart team for one more win (06/30/03)

A couple of former Jay County football players showed off their skills Friday night.

Cameron Hummel and Ben Reinhart participated in the East-West Hall of Fame Classic football game at Richmond, leading the West squad to a 27-6 victory. It was the third victory for the West in the game’s three-year history.

The West team included players from Anderson, Anderson Highland, Muncie Central, Muncie South, Delta, Pendleton Heights, Wes-Del, Frankton and Jay County. The East was made up of Richmond, Centerville, Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central, Shenandoah, Lincoln, Union City, Winchester, Mount Vernon and New Castle.

Starting at quarterback, Hummel broke a scoreless tie after one quarter by busting into the end zone twice in the second quarter. He scored on a pair of five-yard runs, one just 1:17 into the second period, and a second with 1:29 to go before halftime.

The West added another score in the third quarter for a 20-0 lead before the East squad finally got on the board early in the fourth period. Still, Hummel put the icing on the cake, scoring the West’s final touchdown on a one-yard run with 32 seconds to play.

Hummel had nine carries for 25 yards and three touchdowns in the contest. He will play at Rose-Hulman next year, where he plans to study engineering.

For his part, Reinhart played linebacker for a stifling West defense, and also joined the special teams crew.

He helped anchor a squad that did not allow an East runner to break the 60-yard mark, and held the entire opposing squad to less than 100 yards rushing. He was in on a host of tackles, including a sack on the final play of the game.

Reinhart also threw a key block on an interception return, helping to pick up an extra 20 yards.

He also took the ball for one rushing attempt and gained a few yards for a first down to keep the third scoring drive alive.

Reinhart will attend Purdue this fall and study biology.
