Huntington North rallies to top Patriots (04/29/04)

Local Roundup

Jay County did more in the first inning than it had against Huntington North all last season. But, it couldn’t hold on to upset the Vikings.

The Patriot softball team scored three times in the first inning before falling to an 8-3 defeat at Huntington North Wednesday.

Jay County (6-9, 2-4 Olympic Athletic Conference) — which was no-hit by the Vikings a season ago — jumped on top quickly. It racked up three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, and held the lead through the first three.

However, Huntington North (10-3) took the lead with a four-run fourth inning. It racked up four hits and two walks in the frame to pull ahead, and added two runs in the fifth for the final margin.

The Patriots struggled after jumping out quickly as they never scored again. They struck out 10 times and had just two hits after the first inning.

Chelsea DeBoy had just one of those hits, but it keyed the first-inning rally. She ripped a two-run double to score Jenni Chittum and Stephanie Imel, and then came around to score on a single by Saffron Redwine.

Miranda Betz had the only other extra-base hit for the Patriots with a double. Imel had two hits, and Chittum finished with one.

Brittany Logue slipped to 3-4 as she took the loss, allowing eight runs — seven earned — on 11 hits. She struck out one and walked three.

Jay County returns home Friday to play Fort Recovery at 4:30 p.m.

WJ girls win again

She also teamed with Kelly Weaver, Kelci Reed and Krystal Hutchens to take first in the 4x400-meter relay.

Clevenger completed a sweep of the field events by West Jay as she won the shot put. Champ was first in the 200-meter dash, and Reed won the 1,600-meter run.

He also captured the 400-meter dash in 59.8, and won the long jump at 14 feet, five inches.

Brady Mills supported him with two of the Eagles’ other three victories. He won the 800-meter run in 2:37 and the high jump at four feet, four inches.

Mike Daniels, Blake Price, Sha White and Alan Brown teamed for a victory in the 4x100-meter relay.
