IHSAA giving honor to area umpire

An umpire familiar to area baseball fans will be honored this weekend.
Dave Stauffer, who frequently works Jay County and South Adams high school games as well as Portland Rockets games, has been chosen as the 2009 Interscholastic Athletic Official Association award winner for excellence in baseball. He will be honored during this weekend's IHSAA state finals.
Stauffer was selected by a committee that chose one official to honor in each of the IHSAA's 11 sports. There are more than 8,000 officials licensed in Indiana.
During his 27-year career, the Berne resident has officiated 10 baseball regional tournaments, three semi-states and two state finals. He also officiates basketball and volleyball.
Stauffer was a member of 1972 South Adams High School baseball team, which finished as the state runner-up.
Gray shoots 87
FORT WAYNE - Adam Gray shot 87 Friday in his first tournament of the summer, the Indiana Pepsi Junior Golf Program Masters tournament at Chesnut Hills Golf Club.
The Jay County High School graduate struggled on the front nine as he was 12-over-par on the first seven holes. He came up with four straight pars on holes eight through 11 at CHGC, and came up with his lone birdie of the day on the 531-yard, par-5 18th hole.
Ludy gets RBI
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Josh Ludy knocked home one run Tuesday, but it was not enough as his Wisconsin Woodcuks lost 6-3 to the Battle Creek Bombers.
Ludy, a 2008 Jay County High School graduate, started at catcher and had an RBI in the top of the eighth inning as the Woodchucks rallied to tie the game. Battle Creek tallied three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win.[[In-content Ad]]
