Starfires crush pair

Neither Fort Wayne school — Elmhurst or Wayne — was any match for the South Adams cross country teams Thursday.

The Starfires dominated Elmhurst 15-40 in the girls competition, taking five of the top six finishing slots. Wayne did not have enough runners for a team score.

The boys team took second through fifth place to beat Elmhurst 20-35 and Wayne 18-37.

Haleigh Lehman paced the girls team with another easy run to first place. She won the race by 1:19 with a time of 16:02.

Jay freshmen rally

The young Patriots provided some big excitement Thursday.

Jay County’s freshman football team scored with six seconds remaining to defeat the Huntington North Vikings 12-6.

The game looked to be in Huntington North’s hands as it had the ball at the Patriot 20-yard line late in the final period. But, the tide turned when Caleb Carpenter stripped a Viking runner of the ball in the midst of a gang tackle and returned it 65 yards.

Three plays later Carpenter was on the receiving end of the 22-yard, game-winning pass from Josh Johnson.

Johnson was also responsible for the other score by Jay County (3-1). He hit Alex Michael with a 17-yard scoring pass in the first quarter.

Carpenter added a blocked punt in the contest, and Nick Tressler had an interception. Ben Lyons was the defensive star, finishing with double-digit tackles, including several sacks.

Fort falls to Delphos

Fort Recovery’s junior high football teams managed just one score in two losses to Delphos St. Johns Thursday.

The seventh grade team lost 20-0 while the eighth grade team dropped a 30-6 decision.

The East Jay cross country teams scored two wins and one very close loss against Winchester Driver Thursday.

Amanda Johnson and Steven Kelly led their respective teams with first-place finishes. Johnson took the girls race by eight seconds over teammate Amber Detro in 12:22, and Kelly won the seventh grade boys team in 12:12.

Kylie Wellman was right with Johnson and Detro, finishing eight seconds behind Detro in third place. Cassie Laux was ninth in 14:02, and Brianne Wellman placed 10th in 14:14.
