Incumbents ousted from Fort board (11/5/03)
Fort school board election
Two of the three incumbents running for the Fort Recovery School Board were replaced Tuesday, as voters elected two newcomers over a pair of longtime veterans of the board.
Kim J. Day and Susan Homan were the top two vote-getters and joined incumbent board vice president Steven E. Wendel as the three board members elected.
Incumbents Cyril L. Brunswick and Richard F. Willmann were defeated. Brunswick had been a member of the Fort Recovery School Board for more than 12 years, and Willmann had served the school district for just under nine years.
“I’m proud to have been given the opportunity to serve the community for the past 12 years and am extremely grateful to those who have supported the board, administration and staff,” Brunswick, who received 576 votes, 16.7 percent, said this morning. “I wish to congratulate Susan, Kim and Steven and wish them well in their future challenges.”
Day led all candidates with 755 votes — just over 22 percent — and Homan followed with a total of 743 votes, which accounted for 21.6 percent. Steven E. Wendel grabbed the final at-large seat with 19.7 percent of the votes. Wendel is a professor of engineering and industrial technology at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.
“I was really pleased, I’m glad voters have confidence in me to fill that position,” Day, who has already been attending board meetings as a visitor for the past several months, said. “I think the biggest issue facing us now is the state cutting back on funding for certain areas. That’s an issue I want to make sure I’m involved in and I want to make sure we’re not wasting any money.”
Day is the owner of NAPA Auto Parts in Fort Recovery and is currently the fire chief for the Southwest Mercer Fire District, a position he has held for the past five years. He was also assistant chief for nine years and has served a total of 18 years with the department.
“Obviously, I was very excited,” Homan, who has worked at Kaup Pharmacy in Fort Recovery for over 15 years, said. “I really didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping that having a mother’s perspective would be helpful and I’m happy with the way the voters’ voted, there were some other good candidates too.”
Steven F. Wendel was the other challenger. He received a total of 285 votes, which amounted to just over eight percent.[[In-content Ad]]
