CELINA, Ohio — Three was the charm for the girls Saturday.
The Fort Recovery and Jay County girls cross country teams finished third in their respective races at the Celina Rotary Invitational on the Wright State University Lake Campus.
The Indians opened their season by placing third out of 15 teams in the Division II and III girls race, scoring 130 points. They were behind Fort Loramie, which finished fourth in the final 2004 state poll last season, with 67 points and New Bremen with 108.
The Patriots, who were second at the Bellmont Invitational Tuesday, scored 92 points in the Division I race to place behind Strongsville (33) and Findlay (72) in the nine-team field.
Both coaches were thrilled with their teams’ efforts.
“I don’t think we could be any happier today,” said Fort Recovery coach Jason Grieshop. “They came out today and ran the best they’ve run all (summer). They really got the adrenaline going today and had some fun.”
“I thought they did great,” said JCHS coach Les Bantz of his group, especially noting the 5K length of the course. “They were a little bit psyched (out) about the extra K. But they ran a little smarter. Alyssa (Johnson), who was fifth for us, was 15th after 1K, at the midpoint of the race she was 10th and just came on in the last part.”
Jay County’s boys team was fifth out of seven teams with 128 points in the boys Division I race, while Fort Recovery did not field a full boys team.
Johnson, a senior, had the top finish for either girls team, taking fifth in the Division I race behind two runners each from Strongsville and Findlay. She was back in the pack at about 20th early on in the race, but kept steadily climbing forward to finish in 22-minutes, 12 seconds.
Strongsville’s Aubrey Alexander dominated the race by 18 seconds in a time of 20:20.
Freshman Tina Roessner topped the charts for Fort Recovery, running a similar race to Johnson’s. She was third among the Tribe runners early on and second at the midway point before rallying during the second half of the race to take 14th in 22:25.
Anna’s Sarah Schultze finished first in 20:40.
“She kept her steady pace during the whole race,” said Grieshop of Roessner. “As everybody else was slowing down, her running over the summer really helped her out. It helped bring her back up toward the front of the pack towards the end. She ran real well.”
Mindy Vogel was next for the Tribe, just three behind Roessner in 17th in 23:14.
Sandra Sudhoff, a junior in the first race of her career, followed in 23rd with a time of 23:41. Sam Bihn was 37th in 24:42, and Leanne Pottkotter placed 53rd in 25:26.
“The whole team in general ran well,” said Grieshop. “We were real surprised — we’ve got all these new girls out here this year we don’t know what to expect from them. They came here today and really gutted out a good performance.”
Jessica Mosier ran one of the best races of her career to finish behind Johnson for the Patriots. She held the top Jay County spot for much of the race, starting around 10th before slipping to 15th as the runners zoomed past the shore of Grand Lake St. Marys for the second time. She then surged at the end, placing 12th in 22:48.
Amanda Johnson was next for the Patriots, finishing 17th in 23:06. Kylie Wellman took 27th in 23:45, and Allison Fullenkamp ran 42nd in 24:51 in her first race back from injury.
“Jess Mosier ran a great race,” said Bantz. “If she continues to run with heart like that, she’s going to really improve our chances throughout the season ... I think she just wanted a medal real bad.”
Jay County’s top boys finishers went back-to-back in 20th and 21st place. Josh Atkinson crossed the line first in 20:06, and Brady Mills was next in 20:08.
Josh Selvey followed in 26th with a time of 20:36. Robert Ralston was 29th in 20:54, and Doug Murray was 33rd in 21:02.
“I’m impressed with the boys showing some heart,” said Bantz. “We’re moving in the right direction.”
Fort Recovery’s Mitch Fullenkamp turned in the best time of the two local teams, finishing 28th in the Division II and III race in 19:10. Jim Roessner was 51st in 19:48.
Tyler Huelskamp finished 123rd in 23:49, and Matt Heinrichs was 128th in 24:18.
“Individually they all had strong starts to the year,” said Grieshop of the Tribe boys team. “If you compare their times today to what they did last year, they’re right where they need to be. You can tell that they’ve worked over the summer and have put in the time to improve.”
