Indians 8-0 for 2nd straight year

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians are 8-0, again.
Fort Recovery High School’s boys basketball team knocked off the Kalida Wildcats 42-35 Saturday, giving them eight straight wins to open the season for the second straight year.
The Tribe trailed Kalida, which handed the Indians their first loss last season, by two after the opening quarter. But it gave up just 18 points the rest of the way to win despite shooting just 33 percent from the field.
Wade Gelhaus finished with 15 points and four rebounds to lead Fort Recovery. Jared Kahlig joined him in double figures with 10 points, and Jason Pottkotter had eight points and four rebounds.
Kevan Utendorf and Paul Utendorf had 12 and 10 points respectively for the Wildcats.
In the junior varsity game, Michael Joash had six points for FRHS in a 35-26 defeat.

Girls basketball rolls
FORT RECOVERY — The Indians dominated the second quarter on the way to a 44-31 victory over the Van Wert Cougars.
Fort Recovery (8-1) won with defense, limiting the Cougars to 17 percent (4-of-23) shooting in the first half and 23 percent for the game. It outscored Van Wert 9-2 in the second quarter and led by double digits for most of the second half.
Kelly Nietfeld was the lone Indian in double figures as she finished with 13 points. Chelsea Pottkotter added nine points, and Ericka Lennartz notched seven points and seven rebounds.
Olivia Schwieterman dished out five assists, and Kelsey Fiely came up with four steals.

In junior varsity action, Melissa Lochtefeld totaled 11 points in the Indians’ 45-38 loss.
Boys swimmers third
CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery scored 78.5 points to finish third out of four teams at Saturday’s meet at Mercer County YMCA. Celina (191.5) finished first with St. Marys (89) second and Coldwater (42) fourth.
The Indians scored nine points and finished last in the girls competition behind Celina (236), St. Marys (100) and Coldwater (87).
Three Fort Recovery boys turned in second-place finishes, with Mitch Homan taking the runner-up spot in the 500-yard freestyle. Lane Hull was second in the 200 individual medley, and Marshall Hull finished second in the 100 freestyle.
Mackinley Timmerman, Andy Hull, Marshall Hull and Lane Hull added a second-place effort in the 200 freestyle relay.
Cassie Gray paced the girls team, placing fifth in the 200 individual medley.

Freshman girls fall
FORT RECOVERY — The Indian freshman girls basketball team dominated Saturday’s second half on the way to picking up its first win 31-15 over the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders.
Cassidy Rammel scored 12 points for Fort Recovery (1-5), which outscored St. Marys 24-7 in the second half.
Haley Knapke also reached double figures with 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
