Indians push No. 1 Versailles (09/16/05)

VERSAILLES, Ohio — The Tigers went into Thursday night’s match undefeated. They had to scratch and claw to stay that way.

Fort Recovery’s volleyball team became just the second this season to take the Division III No. 1 Versailles Tigers to five games, but couldn’t quite hand the home team its first loss in a 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-10 defeat.

Versailles improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with the victory, knocking the Indians out of a three-way tie for first place. The only other squad to take the Tigers the distance this year was New Knoxville.

Junior middle hitter Tiff Gaerke had another huge match, racking up 29 kills as the Indians dropped to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the MAC. The other two losses came against Division IV No. 1 Sidney Lehman Catholic and Division IV No. 6 Old Fort.

Gaerke also led the team with five blocks, and totaled 11 digs and eight points.

Kelly Link had a team-high 16 points and followed Gaerke with 14 kills. Brittany Brackman notched 14 points and 14 digs. Libero Vicki Roessner had 31 digs, and setter Jennalee Post finished with 47 assists.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery stayed undefeated with a 22-25, 25-15, 15-9 win over Versailles Thursday.

Kinsey Wenning posted a team-high three kills for the Tribe (6-0, 3-0 MAC). She was second on the team in digs (10), points (seven) and kills (six).

Heather Schmackers had 18 assists, Sarah Braun totaled 14 points and LeAnne Tobin notched 11 kills. Joanna Snyder had 12 digs and six kills.

Junior high

UNION CITY — Fort Recovery won the battle of the Indians Thursday. It won the eighth grade match 25-9, 25-11 and the seventh grade match 25-21, 23-25, 15-11 against the Union City Indians.

Sarah Knapke powered the eighth grade team, which improved to 6-1, with 11 points. Lorraine Shier added nine points.

Nicole Pottkotter finished with four points and two kills, and Emily May also had a pair of kills.

Megan Rammel paced the Fort Recovery seventh graders (3-4) with nine points. Deanna Hemmelgarn followed with six.

Olivia Thien and Holly Thien finished with five points apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
