Indians top Coldwater, break record for wins (05/12/04)

FRHS Roundup

What a week.

Fort Recovery won its first softball sectional title in school history with a 7-5 win over St. Henry Monday. The Indians entered the record books again Tuesday, defeating the Coldwater Cavaliers for their school-record 16th win.

The Tribe has now set new single-season win records in each of the last three years, having totaled a 45-21 record of that span. The program had won just 61 games in its first 12 years of existence, but has posted 64 wins in five seasons under coach Marie Osterholt.

Fort Recovery (16-6, 4-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) did all the damage it needed in the top of the first inning against the Cavaliers. It scored five times in the opening frame, and Coldwater scored its only run in the bottom as the teams went scoreless the rest of the way.

A night after Julie Smith earned the save in the sectional title game, she tossed a one-run, four-hit gem for the victory over the Cavaliers. She struck out nine and walked two to improve to 10-3 on the year.

Krystal Rammel had a single, a run and an RBI, and Kelsie Will drove in a pair of runs. Smith singled and drove in one run, and Joscie Kaup singled and scored twice.

Brenda Rindler pushed a run across the plate with a walk and also scored, and Lisa Grisez and Ciera Rammel scored the other two Tribe runs.

Fort Recovery could set another school record — for the best MAC finish in school history — when it hosts Minster Thursday at 5 p.m.

Tribe baseball falls

The Fort Recovery baseball team lost for the fourth straight time Tuesday, dropping a 9-3 decision to the Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Tribe (7-14, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) gave up four runs in the first inning and never led in the contest. Coldwater scored another four runs in the fifth to put the game away.

C.J. Tobe took the loss, allowing nine runs — four earned — in 51/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and struck out six batters.

Dusty Guggenbiller finished with two hits, including a double. He scored two of the Indians’ three runs.

Nick Wehrkamp was also 2-for-3 with a double. Dusty Tobe had a single, a run and an RBI, and Chris Galdeen drove in a run.

The Indians will host Memorial (St. Marys) Thursday at 5 p.m.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team continued to struggle, dropping to 0-14 with a 10-0, five-inning loss to Coldwater Tuesday.

Kevin Schoenherr suffered the defeat, giving up four runs — one earned — on five hits in four innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Kenton Sudhoff and Jordan Staugler each had a hit and a stolen base. David Schmitt had the only other Indian hit.[[In-content Ad]]
