PORTLAND — At this point it might be a good idea for the Jay County gymnastics team to just schedule doctor’s appointments the day after each meet. It’s becoming a group of walking wounded.

Still, despite at least two more injuries, the Patriots continued chugging along Wednesday with a 98.65-84.6 destruction of the Muncie Central Bearcats.

“It wasn’t quite Monday, but it was a pretty good meet,” said Jay County coach Kristin Rees, whose team scored 100 points two days earlier.

It marked the first time the Patriots had broken the century mark since the 2000-01 season.

“Beam was really good (tonight),” she added. “We had the same consistency if not more than we did Monday.”

In fact, Jay County was good enough not only to sweep the balance beam, but every event on the night. It took first, second and third in every event in its final meet before the Olympic Athletic Conference championships.

The Patriots will visit Connersville Saturday at noon as they try to beat the host Spartans, who have won 14 of the last 15 OAC titles.

Wednesday’s victory over the Bearcats opened with domination on the vault, as senior Amanda Knight continued her outstanding accuracy in the event. She took first place with an 8.7, and was followed by sophomore Brittany Bauman with an 8.5.

Lacey Thornburg, the first injured Patriot of the night, jammed her foot as she just barely under-rotated on her first attempt at a Tsukahara. She was done for the night, but still scored an 8.3 to finish third.

Bauman managed to complete the night, but came limping off after her floor exercise with a knee injury.

Lacey Grider was already likely out for the season with what is apparently a torn ACL in her left knee. Melissa Fifer missed a few meets with an arm injury, but has returned to part-time competition this week.

Rees said she’s been proud of the way her team has handled the adversity — with victories over Delta and Muncie Central — but enough is enough.

“I think there’s a fine line between having a few injuries and having people step up and take their places, and having too many (injuries),” she said. “I just hope some of the injuries aren’t season-ending.”

Hannah Williams followed Knight’s vault victory by winning each of the other three events and taking first in the all-around competition with 33.85 points.

Williams dominated the uneven parallel bars by nearly a point with an 8.5, and managed to win the other two events with a couple of flaws in her routines.

She had a fall off the balance beam on the second of her back tucks, but still scored an 8.4 for first place. On the floor she couldn’t quite hang on to her double full, but still finished with an 8.7.

Knight supported Williams with a second-place effort on the bars with a 7.7. Her sister Makenzie Knight was next with a 6.9.

Kayla Smith and Melissa Fifer came through with no-fall beam routines for the second straight meet to earn Rees’ praise. Both stood strong despite a couple of wobbles, with Smith taking second with an 8.2 and Fifer third with an 8.0.

A couple of freshman took second and third on the floor for the Patriots.

Kristin Brown was excellent, finishing second to Williams for the second straight meet with an 8.55. Caitlin Dunn jumped in at third place with an 8.2.

“I was really impressed with Kristin and Caitlin on floor,” said Rees.

The coach hopes to be equally impressed with her team Saturday as it tries for the OAC title. She said she thinks the key may not be in showing all their of its most difficult stunts, but rather performing flawlessly with a little less difficulty.

“I don’t know if we need our big difficulty to beat Connersville,” said Rees. “At our regular-season meet against Connersville we used out big difficulty and they beat us.

“We just have to focus on nice, solid, clean routines.”

Junior varsity

Jay County was dominant at the junior varsity level again, taking first place in each event.

Melissa Fifer had the top JV score for the Patriots. She returned to the floor exercise for the first time in two weeks and came away with a 7.75.

Heather Stevens wasn’t far behind. As the lone Jay County competitor in the JV vault she took first with a 7.7.

Kristin Brown added a win with her first no-fall beam routine to score a 7.5. Brittany Bauman was first on the bars with a 6.8.[[In-content Ad]]
