Inniger leads SA past Knights (12/17/03)

Kindle Inniger put together a big game Tuesday to lead the South Adams girls basketball team to just their second win of the year, a 44-38 triumph over the Norwell Knights.

The Starfires (2-6) trailed by three points at halftime before putting up a 19-point third period to take command of the game. The effort put them up by five heading into the fourth quarter, and they held on of the win.

Inniger paced South Adams with 20 points as she went 3-for-5 from 3-point range. She also had six steals and five assists.

Kelly Mertz contributed 10 points, three rebounds and four steals. Julie Muhlenkamp was the rebounding leader with four, and she added eight points and a couple of blocks.

Norwell (2-8) got 19 points from Mackenzie Warwick.

South Adams lost the junior varsity game 29-17.

The next action for the Starfires will be at the Bellmont Bi-County Tournament Saturday, Dec. 27 as they compete with the host Squaws, Bluffton and Norwell.

Pottkotter pounds Rangers

Jill Pottkotter took matters into her own hands as the Fort Recovery eighth grade girls basketball team scored a 49-21 victory over the New Knoxville Rangers Tuesday. The seventh grade team lost to New Knoxville 20-13.

Pottkotter personally outscored the entire Ranger squad, finishing with 24 points. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds as her team dominated the entire contest.

The seventh graders were tied with New Knoxville after three periods, but went scoreless in the fourth quarter to fall to the defeat.

Rachel Tobe finished with seven points, and Kinsey Wenning added four. Joanna Snyder pulled down 10 rebounds.

Jay to honor grads

Jay County High School will hold this year’s Wall of Fame induction ceremony Friday, Jan. 2.

The ceremony will be at halftime of the boys varsity basketball game against Shenandoah.

This year’s honorees include 2003 graduates Cameron Hummel, Caleb Bye, Josh Jellison, Adam Homan, Derek Arnold and Kyle Weaver. Also to be inducted are Morgan Pierce, Dawn Ogden Alan Garringer, Andrew Wells, Caleb Dann, Taylor Fullenkamp, Megan Johnston and Lisa Weaver.

Time change

The junior varsity start time for Jay County’s boys basketball contest at Wapahani Saturday has been changed. The JV game will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.

Stars finish 1-4

South Adams’ wrestling team had a rough day at the New Castle Super Eight Saturday, finishing with just one team victory.

The Starfires defeated Eastern Hancock 55-21. They suffered losses to the host Trojans, Indianapolis Ben Davis and Whiteland.

Christian Baer led the team on the day with a 5-0 record at 125 pounds. Spencer Haworth (112) and Jimmy Smith (135) each finished the day at 4-1, and Adam Hirschy (160) went 3-2.

The Starfires will visit Woodlan Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Jay 4th at duals

The Jay County wrestling team finished 2-3 at the Delta Super Duals Saturday.

The Patriots defeated Beech Grove 47-33 and Fort Wayne North Side 63-12. They lost to the host Eagles, Greenwood and New Palestine.

Kurtis Hess (140) and Tyler Bash (HVY) each finished at 5-0 to win tournament championships. Bill Spahr (160) was 4-1, and Derek Bogenschutz (125) and Trent Bash (145) each finished 3-2.

Jay County hosts Oak Hill today at 6:30 p.m.

Pee-wee jumpers win

The Gym City Jumpers cheerleading squads competed at the United Cheerleading Association event at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne this weekend.

The jumpers had another good result, with the pee-wee squad placing first and the youth squad taking second. Both squads will be competing in the America’s Best national tournament in St. Louis this spring.

Tied for first again

Thanks to a big win by City of Portland Sunday, four teams are back in a tie for first place in the Jay Community Center’s 3-on-3 men’s basketball league.

City of Portland knocked off the previously unbeaten Soggy Bottom Boyz by a score of 80-66. Most of those points came from Donnie Schlosser, who led the team with 54.

Both teams are now 4-1.

In other games Sunday Jesse Walter Construction topped Jay Community Center 90-63, Lucky (4-1) defeated FCC Indiana 111-70 and Teal Automotive beat Berne Furniture 79-47. Muddy Waters is also 4-1 and tied with Lucky, City of Portland and Soggy Bottom Boyz for first place.

The leading scorer of the week behind Schlosser was Lucky’s Jack Houck with 50 points.[[In-content Ad]]
