Insurance run keys Jay Co. versus Giants (04/23/08)
JCHS softball
MARION - A key insurance run in the sixth inning keyed the Patriots.
The Jay County High School softball team led 3-2 through five innings before tacking on a run in the sixth. It ended up as the game winner as the Patriots held on for a 4-3 victory after the Marion Giants scored once in the bottom of the seventh.
Jay County (7-4) scored three times in the first two innings, but saw their lead whittled to a single run with two frames to play. But Trisha Champ tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Patriots the extra run they needed.
Marion (3-8) pulled within one again in the bottom of the seventh before Amber Edmundson slammed the door for her fifth win of the season.
Champ and Tiffany Davis, the No. 1 and 2 hitters in the JCHS lineup, set the pace with two hits apiece. Champ had a double to go along with her triple and scored a pair of runs, and Davis totaled two runs and an RBI.
Lindsey Wellman also drove in two runs, and Candace Betz and Shelby Gierhart each added a double.
Just one of the three runs against Edmundson was earned as she allowed four hits and a walk in the seven innings. She struck out eight batters.[[In-content Ad]]
