Isenberg leads Rockets to home win

Local roundup

After having five straight home dates canceled, the Rockets finally got to play at Runkle-Miller Field Saturday. They had plenty of offense saved up.

Powered by two Mark Isenberg grand slams, Portland rolled to a 19-0 victory over the Miami Valley Dragons in their first home game since June 7.

The Rockets scored seven times in the first inning, and then Isenberg, a Blackford High School graduate, blasted a grand slam over the scoreboard in left field in the fourth. He hit another grand slam to left in the fifth inning.

JCHS graduate Heath Williams doubled and scored four runs, and Bryce Cook had two hits and three runs.

Bilbrey, Wendel lead wins

DUNKIRK - Gabriela Bilbrey and Chip Wendel were the scoring leaders Saturday in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.

Bilbrey racked up four goals in leading the Sting Rays to a 7-1 win over the Squidz, and Wendel scored four times to power the Jaguars over the Cheetahs by the same score.

Harley Losey, Allison Ruiz, Lillian Rogers and Zarron Lee each finished with two goals on the day.

Waters gets ND

SALA BAGANZA, Italy - Mitch Waters had his sixth win in the bag. His bullpen did not back him up.

Waters, a 2002 Jay County High School graduate, settled for a no decision Saturday despite giving up just one run on one hit in eight innings.

He struck out 10 batters while walking just two, and left the game with a 3-1 lead. However, Andrea Pizzarotti struggled in relief, giving up three runs on four hits and a hit batsman while recording just one out.

The effort dropped Waters' ERA to a team-best 1.59 for the season. He has 83 strikeouts compared to just 15 walks in 85 innings.[[In-content Ad]]
