UNION CITY — Katie Simmons followed up her record-breaking performance with her first victory of the season.
Simmons and teammate Eme Miller took the top two spots Saturday to lead the Jay County High School girls cross country team to victory at the Union City Invitational.
The Patriot girls scored 18 points to finish well ahead of Tri in the field of just three complete teams. The boys scored 59 points to finish as the runner-up behind Union (47) in a five-team field.
Simmons was the only runner in the girls race to break the 20-minute mark, winning in 19 minutes, 52 seconds, and Miller took second with a time of 20:34.
Abigail Johnson was sixth in 21:59 followed by Liz Lennartz (22:00) in seventh place and Kaitlin Hemmelgarn (22:30) in eighth.
Dylan Cope paced the JCHS boys in second place at 18:01. Stephen Scott was fourth in 18:35 ahead of Chaz Carroll (13th – 20:12), Jake Nichols (23rd – 21:36) and Wiley Young (26th – 22:31).

Spikers win one
FRANKLIN — The Jay County volleyball team evened its record with a win in its first match at Saturday’s Franklin Community Invitational, but then dropped its next two.
The Patriots knocked off Greenfield 30-28, 25-20 in their opener before falling 25-19, 25-14 to Southport and 25-23, 25-15 to the host Grizzly Cubs.
Mariah Hornaday led JCHS (9-11) with 16 kills, including seven in the victory over Greenfield, and three blocks in the tournament. Maria Murphy had 14 digs, 13 points, 11 kills and four aces, and Hannah Ainsworth added 31 assists and four aces.
Alyssa Rigby had a team-high of 15 digs, and Malarie Houck scored 10 points.

EJMS 7th goes 2-2
SELMA — East Jay Middle School’s seventh grade volleyball team defeated Union County twice in Saturday’s Selma Invitational and the eighth grade team finished 1-4 with its lone win over Daleville.
Lizzy Schoenlein powered the seventh graders (6-4) with 18 kills, 12 aces and eight digs. Emily Muhlenkamp put up 15 assists, Abby Barcus had 11 kills and Catera Gierhart notched eight digs.

Gabby Hard totaled 18 points, including 12 aces, as the eighth grade Chiefs slipped to 5-6. Hannah Lykins had 10 aces and six assists, Abby Wendel scored 19 points and Mallory Marshall and Ava Kunkler each had five kills.

Chiefs win invite
SELMA — The East Jay girls and sixth/seventh grade boys team each finished first at Saturday’s Selma Invitational.
The Chief girls scored 35 points to dominate the 12-team field as Monroe Central (92) took second, and the sixth/seventh grade boys finished 50 ahead of runner-up Selma with 61.
West Jay was 11th in the 12-team sixth/seventh grade boys field, and EJMS placed fourth out of five teams in the eighth grade boys event.
Emi Minnich and Megan Wellman went one-two to lead the Chief girls with times of 12:13 and 12:26 respectively. In the sixth/seventh grade boys race, Tim Hein paced East Jay in sixth place in 12:17 and Tanner Craw was 30th for West Jay in 13:10.
Matthew Cox took eighth place for the East Jay eighth grade boys in 12:09.

Vore leads Bengals
Kelsey Vore was the only player to each the end zone twice as all four Jay County Pee Wee Football games Saturday finished in shutouts.
Vore had a pair of touchdowns to lead the Bengals to an 18-0 victory over the Falcons, and Noah Hummel and Ryan Schlechty each reached the end zone in the Colts’ 14-0 win over the Giants.
Bailey Cox lifted the Dolphins as they outlasted the Vikings 6-0 in double overtime, and Reid Claycomb scored for the Steelers as they topped the Chiefs 6-0 in overtime.

Stewart places 5th
MONTPELIER — Mason Stewart turned in the top effort among local drivers in Saturday’s action at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Stewart, of Portland, led a group of four area drivers in the Thunder Cars A Main race with a fifth-place finish. Brian Baldauf, Travis Nichols and Sean Torre, all of Portland, were seventh, ninth and 12th respectively.
Jamie Heiser of Fort Recovery was eighth in the Super Streets A Main event followed by Richard Williams of Portland in ninth and Jeff Baldauf of Portland in 11th. Bryant’s Dan Foster finished seventh in the UMP Modifieds B Main race.[[In-content Ad]]
