YORKTOWN — Getting one of their top players back in the lineup Thursday, the Patriots improved their team score by 10 strokes.
With senior Macey Gerber on the course for the first time this year, the Jay County High School girls golf team posted a 430 Thursday to place sixth in the Muncie Central Invitational. They scored a 440 at Monday’s Richmond Invitational.
Abby Denney, a senior, led the Patriots for the third straight time this year, posting four of her six pars as she shot 44 on the front nine at The Players Club. She also had six bogeys on the day as she finished with a 93, nine strokes better than last season.
Gerber bogeyed six of the first eight holes on the front nine as she was consistent throughout the day. She added a par on the 296-yard, par 4 12th hole and finished with a 99.
Brittany Stevens had two pars in her round of 114, and Alysia Fennig rounded out the team score with a 124. Whitney Gray shot 128.

Rockets shut out
CINCINNATI — The Portland Rockets
dropped their National Amateur Baseball Federation regional tournament opener Thursday 4-1 to the Cincinnati Cobalts.
The Rockets scored their run without the benefit of a hit as only two batters reached base in the game.
Heath Williams was one of them, opening the game with a walk. He stole second base, and later scored Portland’s only run on a ground out by Bryan Brudi.
Riley Muhlenkamp also had a walk in the defeat.
Dan Bollenbacher took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out five batters for the Rockets (18-18), who will take on the Cincinnati Chiefs tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Bostic makes team
Kelsi Bostic, an Anderson resident who trains at Portland’s Judan Judo, recently earned a spot on a couple of national teams.
She finished third at the Junior U.S. Open in July, and will compete at the Junior World Championships in Morocco in October. She has also been named to the U.S. team for the International Judo Federation World Cup, which is scheduled for Aug. 26-28 in Miami.
Bostic also placed third at the Jr. Olympic Nationals in Atlanta in July. Maria Chan turned in a third-place effort, and Nick Patterson and Lindsay[[In-content Ad]]
