Jay baseball stays perfect

MUNCIE — A mammoth fifth inning broke open the game for the Patriots Monday as they continued their perfect start to the season.
The Jay County High School baseball team scored nine times in the fifth as it ran its record to 5-0 with a 10-1 victory over the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Senior Andy Haffner shut down the Central offense, allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven batters as he went the distance. He gave up five hits and three walks in his second win of the year.
Jason Houston led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Alex Dunn and Devin Conatser each finished with two hits, one RBI and one run, and Landry Inman scored twice.

Patriots in eight
HUNTINGTON — The Jay County softball team had the defending regional champion Huntington North Vikings on the ropes Monday, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one in the eighth in a 6-5 defeat.
Nikka Chaney led the offense for the Patriots (3-2), who scored all five of their runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. She went 3-for-4 with a run.
Chelsea Tighe added a single and two RBIs, and Rachelle Jackson had a hit and a run.
Chaney gave up six runs — five earned — on nine hits as she took the loss against Huntington North, which knocked Jay County out of the tournament 3-0 in the sectional semifinal round last season.

Indians lose in 5
FORT RECOVERY — The Parkway Panthers scored 11 times in the third inning Monday as they handed the Fort Recovery softball team a 19-1, five-inning loss.
Beca Tobe took the defeat for the Indians, giving up 18 runs — 11 earned — on 15 hits and six walks in three innings. She struck out two batters.
Sierra Loya doubled and scored the only run for Fort Recovery (2-8), which has dropped eight in a row. Jackie Fullenkamp had a single and an RBI, and Taylor Guggenbiller and Ashley Homan added one hit apiece.

Devils defeat JC
RICHMOND — For the second straight match Jessica Ooten earned the lone point for the Jay County girls tennis team as it fell 4-1 Monday to the Richmond Red Devils.
Ooten, who won a three-setter Thursday in a 4-1 loss to Bellmont, went the distance again to knock off Katy Robinson 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. The No. 2 doubles match also went three sets, but Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to Kaitlin Kramer and Krissy Kramer at the Patriots slipped to 1-2.
Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-4 to Maddie Farris and Julia Hays. Alyssa Rigby fell 6-1, 6-0 to Peyton Young at No. 1 singles, and Miranda Reinhart lost 6-3, 6-4 to Madina Saytmuradova at No. 3 singles.
JCHS won the junior varsity match 6-2 with Melinda Penrod and Brooke Fraley each picking up 8-0 victories.

Chiefs top FR, UC
UNION CITY — The East Jay Middle School girls track team scored 71 points Monday to win a three-team meet over Fort Recovery (37) and host West Side (18). The boys team finished with 48.5 points with Fort Recovery (46) in second and West Side (31.5) third.
Erica Kunkler paced the girls team with victories in the 800-meter run and long jump. Nathan Heitkamp took the top spot in the boys 200 dash and long jump.
Adding wins for the girls team were Lizzy Schoenlein, Emi Minnich, Ava Kunkler, Emma Laux, Sydney Robbins and Taylor Homan. Matt Blackford and Nick Lairson picked up victories for the boys.

Eagles defeat HC
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s girls track team clobbered visiting Hartford City 87-13 Monday, and the boys team rolled to a 70-30 victory.
Courtney Cox took the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 12.38 seconds and the 100 hurdles in 19.3 for the girls, and Kyndal Miller won the 100 dash in 14.18 and the 200 dash in 32.21. The Eagle boys swept the field events with Will Watson winning the shot put and discus and Phillip Newsome finishing first in the long jump and high jump.
Also picking up wins for West Jay were Samantha Back, Lillian Rogers, Kimber Harris and Hannah Ault for the girls, and Andrew Trewyn, Jake Myers and Daniel Meranda for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
