JCHS boys tennis
HARTFORD CITY - Jared Valentine and Adam Horn avoided going to a third set. Chase Wellman played his first, and came through for the Patriots.
Those two victories lifted the Jay County High School boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory Monday over the host Blackford Bruins.
In his first three-set match at No. 3 singles, Wellman controlled the decided set for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Alex Williams to complete the Patriot win. He is now 9-5 on the year, and JCHS improved to 7-4.
At No. 1 doubles, Horn and Valentine (6-8) cruised through the first set before getting a strong challenge fro Micah Adkins and Austin Ford in the second. But they held on to win in two sets, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Senior Kyle Simmons continued his hot streak, winning his 11th straight match after an 0-3 start. He defeated Aaron Williams 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Phil Powell (6-7) lost 6-3, 6-3 to Adam Durm at No. 1 singles. Sam Miller and Tylor Smith (1-12) dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Aric Durm and Blake Musselman at No. 2 doubles.
Junior varsity
Jay County fell 3-2 to the Bruins with the doubles teams picking up the two victories.
Cowan and Ainsworth beat Nick Ramey and Trevor Schanders 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match Tony Schwieterman and Joe Imel topped Keegan Nunez and Evan Baughey 6-4.
In singles matches Brad Leuthold lost 8-1 to Evan Baughey at No. 1, Jordan McBride fell 8-7 (10-8) to Ethan Harriett at No. 2 and Matt Shrack lost 8-0 to Damon Kemp.
