PORTLAND — Shooting isn’t everything.
Jay County got out-shot from the field by 16 percent Friday night. Its top two scorers — Trent Bailey and Mark Kelly — were a combined 8-of-23 from the field. But, they made up for it elsewhere.
The Patriots dominated the glass and were lights out at the foul line, especially in the fourth quarter, as they knocked off the Union City Indians 59-46.
“It wasn’t a very pretty win, but you have to credit Union City,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle. “They’re a much better basketball team than (coach Dave Marshall) has had in the past.
“Rebounding and free throws were obviously the big part of the game tonight for us. We really were struggling to score. Even our good shots weren’t going in. So, we had to find another way to score.”
Jay County (11-7) did so at the foul line, where it hit all of its 11 fourth-quarter tries and finished 17-of-20 (85 percent) for the game.
Bailey led that effort, going 8-of-10 en route to his game-high 19 points. Kelly, who finished with 12 points, was 3-of-4, and Corey Comer (11 points), Andy Pinkerton and Zac Green each their only two attempts.
Kelly finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 of the Patriots’ 32 rebounds. Comer and John Retter each added seven boards.
“He was pretty relentless on the boards,” said Teagle of Kelly. “He cleaned up a lot of misses.”
Union City, on the other hand, finished just 8-of-20 from the free-throw line while notching just 17 boards.
Jay County used the rebounding advantage to put up 13 more field goal attempts than the Indians.
“It was much closer at halftime on the boards,” said Marshall, whose squad dropped to 11-8. “They pulled away on the boards and converted some points (in the second half). That’s something you’ve got to fix if you want to be a championship-type team.”
The Indians never led in the game, despite shooting 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the field in the first quarter and 55 percent overall. Kelly put Jay County on top quickly with a 3-pointer on an assist from Comer, and Comer added another quick bucket for a 5-0 lead. The Patriots took an 18-14 lead at the quarter break, watched it slip to one and the pushed back ahead by six at the half.
Union City kept the game close in the third quarter, but Comer, Retter and Bailey combined for a 7-0 run early in the fourth to push ahead 44-32. The visitors never got to within single digits in the final six minutes of the contest.
Aaron Wilcox paced the Indians with 14 points in the defeat on 7-of-1 shooting. Nic Lahey added eight points.
Carson Jenkinson had the team-high for Union City with four rebounds, and Andy Lea dished out three assists.
Scott Bruggeman had four assists for Jay County, and Tyler Rigby added three.
The Patriots will close their home season tonight against Norwell at 6:30 p.m. Their final regular-season game will be at Union County Friday.
Junior varsity
Jay County’s junior varsity team improved to 13-5 Friday with a 33-24 victory over Union City.
The Patriots led by just two at the half, but took control as Randy Evans had a big third quarter. He hit a trio of 3-pointers in the period, accounting for all but one Jay County point as it outscored the Indians 10-3.
Evans finished with a team-high 14 points. Rhett Retter added eight points, and Luke McClung had six.
Josh Spence paced Union City with 10 points, and Roy Frazier had six points.[[In-content Ad]]
