Jay beats Stars

JCHS/SAHS softball

BERNE — The Jay County High School softball team held on for a 6-4 victory Wednesday despite a late rally by the host South Adams Starfires.
The Patriots (4-6) built a 6-1 lead, scoring two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings. SAHS scored once in the bottom of the sixth inning and twice in the seventh, but its rally fell short.
Chelsea Tighe, a freshman, led Jay County to its victory by going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Senior Kendra Younger had a single, two runs and an RBI, and Lexie Gierhart added two hits and an RBI.
Rachelle Jackson earned the win as she struck out six batters. She allowed four runs — three earned — on seven hits and a walk.
Lily Taing suffered the loss, giving up six runs — four earned — on six hits and a walk.
Logan Chandler powered the Starfire offense, going 2-for-4 with a run. Lyndsey Chandler, Alexis Ford and Brittany Pugsley each had a hit and a run.
In the junior varsity game, South Adams tallied five runs each in the second and third innings on the way to topping the Patriots 14-4 in five innings.
Whitni Somers gave up nine runs — five earned — on four hits and five walks in the defeat. Rachel Ferguson and Sara Bollenbacher each had a hit, a run and an RBI.

Tribe baseball falls
FORT RECOVERY — The St. John’s Blue Jays handed Fort Recovery a 14-0 defeat Wednesday in five innings.
St. John’s (11-4, 7-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored four times in the second inning, five in the fourth and four in the fifth. Kent Retz took the loss as he gave up nine runs — seven earned — on six hits, four hit batsmen and three walks.
Shane Pottkotter and Gabe Riegel had the lone hits for the Indians (2-16, 0-7 MAC).

Jay baseball loses
HARTFORD CITY — Jay County scored twice in the final frame Wednesday, but still dropped to 3-11 with an 8-5 loss to the host Blackford Bruins.
Andy Haffner took the loss for the Patriots as Blackford scored five of its runs in the fifth inning. He gave up six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Ryan Miskinis finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Jay County and drove in a pair of runs. Chance Fuller singled and scored twice, Kyle Selvey had an RBI and Anthony Skeens and Andre Duke each scored a run.

Lennartz leads win
R.J. Lennartz led the way Wednesday as All Circuit Electrical defeated Ponderosa 12-10  in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Lennartz smacked two hits, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and drove in four runs. Bailey Cox had two hits, two runs and three RBIs.
Blake Caldwell and Rylee Johnson each scored four times Tuesday in Pak-A-Sak’s 21-7 victory over Barnett’s Auto Parts.

Graber, Potts win
South Adams High School seniors Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts dominated the competition Saturday to win the Allen County Athletic Conference girls tennis championship at No. 1 doubles.
Potts and Graber won all of their matches in straight sets, opening with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Leo. They defeated Bluffton 6-3, 6-2 and clobbered Bluffton 6-2, 6-1 for the title.
The three wins in the tournament ran the duo’s record to 15-2.

Waters wins again
SALA BAGANZA, Italy — Mitch Waters picked up his third win of the season Sunday for the Sala Baganza Baseball Club as it defeated Cus Messina 2-1.
The 2002 Jay County High School graduate went the distance, striking out 13 batters without allowing a walk. He gave up just five hits and one unearned run.
Waters also broke up a no-hitter with a single in the eighth inning, later scoring the game-winning run on a sacrifice by Andrea Greci.
He ranks third in Italy’s Serie 2A with a 0.92 ERA and fourth with 45 strikeouts. He is hitting .429 in 14 at bats.[[In-content Ad]]
