Jay, Blackford set for sectional (05/15/07)

Local roundup

MARION - The Jay County and Blackford girls tennis teams will get to play each other after all.

The Patriots were scheduled to open the season against the Blackford Bruins April 3, but a storm forced postponement of the match. It was rescheduled for May 9, only to be called off again because of rain.

But the teams lined up against each other when the sectional draw was held Monday and will meet Thursday in the first round of the tournament at Marion.

Jay County versus Blackford will be the lone match Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to Friday's semifinal round against the five-time defending champion host Giants. Mississinewa and Madison-Grant will play in the other semifinal, and the championship match will be Saturday at 10 a.m.

A year ago the Patriots lost to Blackford during the regular season, but defeated the Bruins 4-1 in the sectional semifinal round.

Waters getting a look

Jay County graduate Mitch Waters will get his chance to play for a pro team.

Waters has signed with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League. He is scheduled to pitch tonight in an exhibition game against Western Michigan University before the team opens its regular season Wednesday.

He is a 2002 Jay County graduate who pitched at Ancilla College and Machester College each for two seasons. He finished the 2006 campaign with 11 saves, good for second in the nation in the NCAA's Division III, and returned to Manchester as a coach this year.
