UNION CITY — If nothing else, a day of tough tennis at the DeKalb Invitational had the Patriots ready to get back on the court.
Jay County’s boys tennis team, which placed fifth in the eight-team field at DeKalb Saturday, scored a pair of shutouts as it dominated the Union City Indians 5-0 Monday.
It takes a minimum of 12 games to win any individual match — six in each set. Union City managed to win just 12 games in the five matches combined.
Senior No. 1 doubles pair Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby and No. 2 doubles player Josh Ludy led the Jay County effort, each blanking their opponent.
Evans and Rigby improved to 3-2 with their 6-0, 6-0 win over Blaine Manning and Andrew Mote, and Ludy, a sophomore, has the same record after his 6-0, 6-0 victory over Matt Peden.
Kurt Hess and No. 2 doubles duo Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan each pitched one shutout set in their victories.
Hess, who is 4-1 with his lone loss in Saturday’s title match, crushed Cody Wicker 6-2, 6-0. Rigby and McCowan gave up just one more game in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Josh Thornburg and Nick Fields.
Freshman Phil Powell completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Aaron Hickey at No. 3 singles.[[In-content Ad]]
