JCHS swimming

HAGERSTOWN — Tuesday’s trip to Hagerstown was a welcome one for the Patriot tankers.

Jay County’s swim teams each came away with a victory over the host Tigers, the girls by a 119-64 score and the boys 101-80. It marked the first victory in seven tries for the boys team, and the first win for the girls since topping Elwood Nov. 17.

The girls team, which opened with three straight wins and is now 4-6, used a mixed-up lineup, getting first career wins from four different swimmers.

Freshman Kelci Reed led that group of first-timers as she posted a career-best time in the 200-yard individual medley. She finished in 2-minutes, 58.37 seconds, nearly 50 seconds ahead of Becca Lanter of Hagerstown.

Maddie Fennig and Briann Saxman, also freshmen, took first place in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle respectively. Fennig’s win came by 7.5 seconds with a time of 1:21.99 while Saxman edged Hagerstown’s Stephanie Bruns by 26 hundredths in 1:08.44.

Wilkins, a junior first-year swimmer, led a sweep of the 500 freestyle in front of teammates Stephanie Skiver and Molly Sutton. She won by 20 seconds with a time of 7:33.58.

Also posting victories for the Patriots were senior Lindsey Vesperry in the 200 freestyle (2:21.19) and freshmen Cori Vormohr in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.53) and April Acker in diving (140.75).

The girls team also won all three relays.

Tom McCord again led the boys team, taking first place in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. He dominated his specialty event, the backstroke, winning by more than four seconds in 1:03.13, and finished the butterfly in 1:05.85.

Scott Walker was first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:03.43, and Todd McCowan took first place in diving with 162.35 points. McCord, Walker, Chance Milligan and Lance VanSkyock teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay.[[In-content Ad]]
