Jay Co. draws Archers (05/15/08)

JCHS/SAHS baseball

INDIANAPOLIS - Maybe Luke Goetz will get to play shortstop again.

Monday night the Class 4A No. 7 Jay County High School baseball team racked up nine first-inning runs against the Fort Wayne South Side Archers. It was so in control that coach Lea Selvey made several moves, including the switch of Goetz, the senior center fielder who said it was his dream to play the infield before he graduated, with shortstop Thomas McCowan.

Thanks to today's sectional draw, the teams Patriots and South Side will meet again in the opening round of the Class 4A tournament hosted by Huntington North at Huntington University.

South Adams will open the Class 2A sectional at Woodlan against the third-ranked Bishop Luers Saints.

Jay County (18-2) and the Archers drew the byes in Sectional 6 and will play in semifinal action Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m.

The opening round of the tournament will be Monday, May 26, Memorial Day, with Marion meeting Homestead in the first game at 11 a.m. Fort Wayne North Side and the No. 8 host Vikings will play at 1:30 p.m.

The winners of Monday's games will play in the first of Tuesday's two semifinal contests at 5 p.m. The championship game will be Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to play in the regional round against the winner of the Carroll tournament.

The Patriots defeated South Side 10-0 Monday. They do not play any other sectional opponents during the regular season.

Jay County won its first sectional title since 1995 last season, taking the Class 3A crown at Blackford before falling at home to Western in the regional championship.

South Adams (10-8) and Bishop Luers will play Monday, May 26, at 11 a.m. The winner will move on to play Bluffton in the semifinal round Tuesday, May 27, at 5:30 p.m.

In the other half of the bracket, Woodlan and Adams Central will play in semifinal action Monday, May 26, at 2 p.m.

The championship game will be Friday, May 30, at 5:30 p.m. with the winner moving on to host the winner of the Cass tournament in the regional round.

The Starfires lost 7-6 in 10 innings to Bishop Luers in April. They have split two games with Adams Central this season, winning 11-5 and losing 2-1. They also defeated Bluffton 18-1 and topped the host Warriors 4-2.[[In-content Ad]]
