Jay Co. edges Vikings (10/13/04)
JCHS boys soccer
HARTFORD CITY — Coach Alan Bailey couldn’t have asked for much more.
His Jay County boys soccer team played great defense and never trailed as for the second straight season it eliminated a team which had been a thorn in its side. The Patriots topped the Huntington North Vikings 2-1 in first round action at the Blackford sectional.
They beat Huntington North by the same score in last year’s sectional opener, after the Vikings had denied them Olympic Athletic Conference titles in back-to-back seasons.
Chad Keen opened the scoring for Jay County (8-7-1) midway through the first half on a breakaway. His shot from about 17-yards out got inside the right post for the 1-0 Patriot lead with 21:34 to play in the first half.
Huntington North managed to tie the game about 10 minutes later before Sergio Woo put Jay County ahead for good. Woo took a direct kick from the right side and lofted it over the Viking goalie’s head to the left corner to put his team up 2-1.
With the one-goal advantage, the Patriot defense locked down for the final 50 minutes. Led by senior Nick May and sophomore Luke McClung, Jay County consistently cleared the ball and didn’t allow Huntington North a decent look at the goal in the second half.
The Patriots finished with eight shots on goal in the contest, compared to just four for Huntington North. Derek Mills came up with three saves.
The victory earned Jay County a sectional semifinal rematch against the Norwell Knights, who defeated Bellmont 5-2 in Tuesday’s other first-round game. They will play Saturday at Blackford at 11 a.m., and the championship game will be at 7 p.m.
Norwell upset the Patriots 2-1 in last season’s sectional semifinal round, but will enter as the favorite this year. The Knights defeated Jay County 10-0 during the regular season.[[In-content Ad]]
