FORT RECOVERY - Bright sunshine and plenty of hits Thursday made for an enjoyable Patriot trip across the state line. Fort Recovery at least managed to salvage one highlight.
Jay County pounded out 18 hits before the Indians got on the board with a Scott Hein home run as the visitors cruised to a 15-3 victory.
The Patriots ran their record to 10-2, racking up six runs each in the second and third innings.
"We've got pretty good hitters all the way through the lineup," said JCHS coach Lea Selvey, whose team has scored double-digit runs in eight of its 10 wins. "When one or two guys start hitting, it seems like they all hit. ... We don't have a weak part of the lineup, and we have some kids on the bench who can come and have done the job for us."
Jay County didn't just get one or two hits to start barrage, it got four in a row to open the second inning. Andy Hughes started the string with a single to center field, Tony McCowan and Rhett Retter followed with back-to-back doubles and Casey Waters added a single to left.
Michael Jobe followed a Luke Goetz walk with the third double of the inning before the Indians finally recorded an out on an RBI grounder from Josh Selvey. Josh Ludy added an RBI single to cap the six-run frame, but the Patriots picked up right where they left off in the third inning.
Retter ripped his second double of the game to lead off the third, and Thomas McCowan added an RBI double. Ludy, Hughes, Tony McCowan and Goetz each had singles as JCHS put up another six runs for a 13-0 lead, which expanded to 15-0 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.
"They have some hitters ... some really good hitters," said Fort Recovery coach Aaron Vaughn after his team dropped to 8-7. "They hit the ball well, ripped it.
"We put the ball in play a little bit, but (Ludy) got rolling. He was a good pitcher as well as a good hitter, as advertised.
"Even when we got behind we learned some stuff for tournament. That's the way we have to look at it.
"If you think about this one too much you'll just drive yourself crazy. You just get over it."
Jay County finished with six doubles and got three hits and two runs apiece from Thomas McCowan, Retter, Ludy and Hughes. Thomas McCowan drove in three runs, and Ludy had a pair of RBIs.
Michael Jobe stole a base and scored three times, and Goetz added a pair of runs.
Ludy, getting a look from a South Alabama scout, moved from his usual spot behind the plate to the mound and tossed three scoreless innings. He gave up just two hits while striking out five batters.
"We don't think of (Ludy) as a pitcher, but here was a day we needed him to pitch. (The Indians) worried me, because I know they can hit the ball," said Selvey. "I think it's his savvy (that makes him effective). He does have a decent breaking pitch ... A lot of it is ... just his composure."
The highlight for the Indians came in their final at bat as seniors Tony Diller and Kevin Schoenherr opened the frame with back-to-back singles to set the stage for their classmate. Hein gave Fort Recovery fans something to cheer about, rifling a line drive over the left-center field fence for his first career home run.
"That was a positive. Scottie put a good swing on that," said Vaughn. "At Fort Recovery, when the wind is not blowing in and it's pretty calm if you get it up in the air it's going to go. He just put a nice line shot out there. ... He should be proud of that."
Toby Metzger took the loss for the Tribe, giving up 11 runs - eight earned - on 10 hits and two walks in 22/3 innings.
