Jay Co. falls to Knights

OSSIAN — The Patriots scored 12 times in the first five innings Thursday, but it still wasn’t quite enough.
The host Norwell Knights tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and then got a walk-off home run in the ninth to send the Jay County High School softball team home with a 14-13 defeat.
Katlin Petro powered the Patriots’ offense in the shootout, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Rachelle Jackson added three hits, two runs and two RBIs, Taylor Franklin had three hits, two RBIs and a run and Nikka Chaney finished with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
Katie Aker notched three hits, and Kendra Younger scored twice.
Chaney took the loss for JCHS (3-3), giving up five runs — four earned — on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings of relief.

Rebels top tennis
Jay County won both doubles matches Thursday, but got swept by the visiting Muncie Southside Rebels in singles action in a 3-2 defeat.
Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth improved to 3-1 on the season at No. 1 doubles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jadelyn Reed and Elizabeth Allison. Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben defeated Toni Gudger and Megan Fields 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action for the Patriots (1-4), Emily Huntsman lost 6-4, 6-4 to Stephanie Hiatt at No. 1, Jessica Ooten fell 6-1, 6-4 to Jennifer Lewis at No. 2 and Rachel Ray also lost in straight sets at No. 3 to Alina Bachaheim.
JCHS dominated the junior varsity match 7-0 with shutout victories from Cindy Hein, Avery Loyd and Melinda Penrod. Other wins came from Brooke Fraley and the teams of Makenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens, and Jill Dirksen and Sydney Bost.

JV baseball rolls
GASTON — The Patriots picked up their fourth straight victory after dropping their season opener to Northeastern, defeating the host Wes-Del Warriors 12-3 Thursday.
Blake Boughman led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Jason Houston hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning as he finished with two hits and three runs.
Taylor Fugiett had two hits, including a double, and two runs, and Toby McCallister also scored two runs. McCallister tossed four innings to earn the victory.

WJ track cruises
DUNKIRK — James Williams and Will Watson each won two events Thursday to lead the West Jay Middle School boys track team to a 57-43 victory over the visiting Wes-Del Warriors. The girls team got victories from seven different athletes in a 72-28 triumph.
Williams’ wins came in the 100-meter dash and high jump, while Watson took the top spot in the shot put and discus. Other wins for the boys team came from Seth Trissel (400 dash), Bowen May (200 dash) and Phillip Newsome (long jump).
The Eagle girls swept the field events, with Tyra Westlake first in the shot put at 26 feet, 5 inches and Brea Holdcroft winning the discus at 70 feet even. Emily Walter took the high jump at 4 feet, 1 inch, and Melony Eley was first in the long jump at 12 feet even.
Kimber May took the hurdles in 19.2 seconds, Kylie Ring won the 800 run in 3 minutes, 21 seconds and Courtney Cox picked up the victory in the 200 dash in 33.5.
In Monday’s meet against East Jay and Monroe Central, Watson and Newsome dominated the field events for the WJMS boys squad. Watson took the shot put at 34 feet, 3 inches and the discus at 94 feet, 1 ½ inches while Newsome picked up wins in the high jump at 4 feet, 6 inches and the long jump at 14 feet, 2 inches. Newsome was also first in the 100 dash in 13.01.[[In-content Ad]]
