BERNE - Jay County won more individual events than any of the other teams. It also picked up more relay victories.
That was not enough to put the team on top of the standings.
Despite the first-place efforts, the Jay County Summer Swim Team settled for third place Saturday at the Wabash Valley Conference Championships.
Host South Adams successfully defended its title with 2,497 points. Wells Community edged Jay County for second place, 2,077-2,075.
Sam Miller led a group of three triple winners as he set three conference records at the meet.
The most impressive of those came in the 100-meter breaststroke, where he destroyed a 28-year-old Adams Central record. He broke the mark of 1-minute, 13.1 seconds set in 1981 by nearly four full seconds in 1:09.26.
Miller also destroyed Jason Arnold's record of 1:01.31 in the 100 butterfly set in 1990, winning the event in 59.8. And he bettered his own 200 individual medley record of 2:19.24 by swimming to victory in 2:16.35.
Vormohr sisters Cori and Anne also picked up three wins apiece. Cori, set to swim at Ball State next year, took the 15-and-older girls butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke, and Anne won the 11-12-year-old girls backstroke individual medley and short freestyle.
Sophie Bader added victories in the 11-12-year-old girls division in the long freestyle and butterfly. In the 9-10-year-old division Noah Hummel and Alex Bader won the butterfly and individual medley in the boys and girls races respectively.
Christopher McDowell finished first in the 8-and-younger boys long freestyle and backstroke, and Caitlin Mark took the 13-14-year-old girls individual medley and breaststroke.
Single wins came from Eliza Bader, David Ostrowski, Sydney Mathias, Quin Blakely, Eme Miller and Neal Fennig.[[In-content Ad]]
