Jay Co., Fort get good news (01/28/08)
JCHS/FRHS basketball
There was some good tournament news for both the Jay County girls and Fort Recovery boys basketball teams Sunday when sectional brackets were released.
While the Patriot girls missed out on the bye, they drew the team with the worst record in the Class 4A Sectional 6 bracket. And the Indian boys earned the No. 2 seed in the Division IV tournament at Coldwater, pushing back a possible meeting with the No. 1 team in the state to the district final.
The JCHS girls will open play at Huntington North as they return to Class 4A for the first time since 2001. After winning three Class 3A sectional titles in the last six seasons, the Patriots (16-3) will play Fort Wayne North Side (5-13) Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m.
Division IV No. 10 Fort Recovery (12-4) will avoid top-ranked New Knoxville (14-0), the team that it lost to in the sectional championship last year and by 33 earlier this season, in the opening rounds of the tournament. The Indians will play for a sectional title at Coldwater Friday, Feb. 22, at 7:45 p.m. against the winner of an opening-round match-up Tuesday, Feb. 19, between New Bremen (9-6) and Minster (6-8).
The second opening-round game at Huntington North will pit No. 5 Fort Wayne South Side (17-3) against Homestead (9-8). Semifinal games will be Friday, Feb. 8, with Tuesday's winners meeting at 6 p.m. and the host Vikings (12-9) taking on Marion (16-3) at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. with the winner returning to Huntington North a week later for regional action.
The other side of the bracket at the Coldwater tournament has Lima Perry (7-10) playing Waynesfield-Goshen (6-10) Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 6:15 p.m., prior to the New Bremen/Minster match-up. The winner will advance to play New Knoxville in the first sectional title game Feb. 22 at 6:15 p.m.
The pair of champions from Coldwater will advance to the Wapakoneta district to take on the winners from the sectional at Bath.
Jay County is 0-2 against sectional opponents this season, having lost by four points to both South Side and Huntington North. South Side is perfect against sectional foes at 4-0, followed by Marion (1-0), Huntington North (3-2), Homestead (1-2) and North Side (0-3).
Fort Recovery defeated Minster 44-27 in December. It will play New Bremen Friday night.
