Volleyball sectional
MUNCIE and NEW BREMEN, Ohio — A second comeback try from a 2-0 deficit in three days didn’t make it for the Patriots. The Indians lasted longer, but fell a few points short.
Both Jay County and Fort Recovery dropped out in the semifinal round of their respective sectional tournaments Saturday.
The Patriots lost 25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 to the Tipton Blue Devils at Delta, and the Tribe fell 28-26, 25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 16-14 at New Bremen to the Minster Wildcats.
Tipton went on to a three-game loss to the host Eagles (21-12) in Saturday’s championship match.
Minster (12-10) will take on top-seeded Division IV No. 4 New Knoxville (20-2) in one of two sectional championship matches at New Bremen Tuesday.
Jay County (6-29), which rallied from a two-games-to-none deficit in its sectional opening victory over Elwood Thursday, again dropped the first two games against the Blue Devils Saturday. It eked out a victory in game three, but could not come all the way back a second time.
Senior Markie Runyon paced the Patriots in their final match of the 2005 season, finishing with team highs of nine kills, eight digs and two blocks. Junior Theresa Reinhart matched Runyon with eight digs while also notching five kills and two aces.
Erica Clark totaled 26 assists and five kills. Kelly Sautbine and Sarah Mescher each had five kills, and Brittany O’Dell added four kills.
Fort Recovery, which topped Minster 25-18, 14-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-9, during the regular season, dug itself too big a hole to get out of as well. It rallied to take games three and four before dropping the fifth by just two points.
Junior middle hitter Tiff Gaerke carried the offensive load for the Indians (13-10), finishing with nearly as many kills (31) as the rest of the team combined (34). She also had team highs of nine points and four blocks and was second on the squad with 19 digs.
Senior setter Jennalee Post had 51 assists, eight points and two blocks, and Lauren Wenning added 12 kills and two blocks.
Vicki Roessner, the libero, totaled 34 digs, and Kelly Link had a pair of blocks. Holly Stein and Kristen Schwieterman each scored nine points[[In-content Ad]]
