MUNCIE - To say Friday night's game wasn't close would be an understatement.
Jay County High School's girls basketball team scored nearly as many points in the opening quarter as the Muncie Southside Rebels managed in the entire game as the Patriots rolled to an 84-29 victory.
The point total for JCHS was the highest since thumping Daleville 86-15 during the 2002-03 seasons. It improved the team to 1-1 after Tuesday's 62-58 loss to Class 4A No. 8 Fort Wayne South Side.
The Patriots, who are now 1-0 in the Olympic Athletic Conference, dominated throughout as they scored 27 points in the opening quarter. They finished 5-of-9 from 3-point range in the first half for a 46-15 lead at the break.
Lindsey Wellman and Kaelee Keller led the Jay County effort with 14 points apiece against the Rebels (0-1, 0-1 OAC). Abby Loy scored 13 points, and Cassandra Huelskamp joined them in double figures with four 3-pointers for her 12 points.
Sophomore guard Pazia Speed added nine points, and reached double-digit rebounds for the second straight game to open the year. She led a Patriot domination on the glass, 42-23.
Southside took just 35 field-goal attempts in the game thanks to 40 turnovers. It was 0-for-7 from 3-point range.
Junior varsity
Jay County rolled out to a 17-3 lead in the opening quarter and dominated throughout for a 50-6 win over the Rebels.
The Patriots went up by 20 at the half, allowing just a single point in the second quarter. They added a 12-0 final period as they improved to 2-0.
