Jay Co. girls fall to HN (01/11/06)
Basketball roundup
HUNTINGTON — The Patriots won’t be sad to have this portion of the schedule in their rear-view mirror.
Jay County’s girls dropped their fourth straight game Tuesday, and sixth out of its last eight, slipping below .500 for the first time since Nov. 19 with a 67-54 loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
After trailing by one at the end of the first quarter the Patriots (7-8) grabbed a 17-15 lead early in the second. But it was all downhill from there as Huntington North outscored them 38-14 for the remainder of the middle quarters. The Vikings (11-4) pushed their lead as far as 23 points, and Jay County never got closer than the final margin.
This marks the second straight season the Patriots have gone winless against this central stretch of four teams — Fort Recovery (7-1), Elwood (11-3), Class 3A No. 7 New Castle (11-2) and Huntington North. Over the past two years they are 0-9 against those four schools (including sectional) and 23-5 versus the remainder of their schedule. But the games have been close, as the previous three of those losses this year came by three, seven (after leading by nine with six minutes to go) and two points.
Brittany Smelser and Amber Clark led the Vikings’ second- and third-quarter dominance. Smelser scored 16 of her game-high 25 points during those two periods, and the 6-foot-2 Clark had all of her 14 points during the stretch. Jay County lost despite holding Kentucky-bound Chelsea Kilty to just seven points.
Sara Garringer was the lone Patriot in double figures, scoring 22 points. Markie Runyon added eight points and six rebounds, and Dana Horn dished out five assists.
Jay County also dropped the junior varsity contest, falling to 12-3 with a 53-39 loss to the Vikings. Amber Edmundson paced the Patriots with 11 points, Natasha Stout had nine and Kaelee Keller scored six.
SA drops 9th straight
The South Adams girls lost their ninth consecutive game Tuesday, dropping their Allen County Athletic Conference tournament opener 43-28 to the Woodlan Warriors.
The Starfires (1-11) scored no more than six points in any of the opening three quarters, falling behind 36-14. They shot just 8-of-28 (29 percent), making only 2-of-12 3-pointers (17 percent).
Kayla Coblentz finished with nine points, two assists, two steals and a block to lead South Adams. Julie Muhlenkamp had seven points, four rebounds and a block.
Kelly Bradtmueller notched 15 points, 10 in the first half, for Woodlan. Adrienne Numbers added 11.
